John McLean
John McLean (March 11, 1785 – April 4, 1861) was an American jurist and politician who served in the United States Congress, as U.S. Postmaster General, and as a justice of the Ohio and U.S. Supreme Courts. He was often discussed for the Whig Party nominations for President, and is also one of the few people who served in all three branches of government. Born in New Jersey, McLean lived in several frontier towns before settling in Ridgeville, Ohio. He founded '' The Western Star'', a weekly newspaper, and established a law practice. He won election to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1813 until his election to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1816. He resigned from that position to accept appointment to the administration of President James Monroe, becoming the United States Postmaster General in 1823. James Caldwell (Ohio)
James Caldwell (November 30, 1770May 5, 1838) was the first member of the United States House of Representatives to represent Ohio's 4th congressional district. Early and family life His father James Caldwell (1724-1804) and his wife Elizabeth were Irish gentry whose name reflected Castle Caldwell established in Ulster Plantation a century earlier. They had emigrated with nine children to Maryland in 1769 and then moved to what became Wheeling in what was then Virginia in 1772. During their sea voyage, Elizabeth Caldwell gave birth to Samuel Caldwell, and in Baltimore, Maryland she bore this James Caldwell Jr., then Susana Caldwell (b. 1772), Alexander Caldwell(1774-1838), and Joseph Caldwell (b. 1777). Peter Hitchcock (judge)
Peter Marshall Hitchcock (October 19, 1781 – March 4, 1853) was an attorney, teacher, farmer, soldier, legislator, and jurist. His judicial career included 28 years service on the Ohio Supreme Court, 21 years of them as Chief Justice. (Some sources erroneously give his date of death as March 4, 1854.) Early life, education and family Peter Hitchcock was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, the youngest son of Valentine Hitchcock (1741–1809) and Sarah Hotchkiss (1743–1802). His father was a tailor and landowner. Peter taught in a district school during the winter and worked on a farm in the summer to earn the money for his education. He entered college in the sophomore year, pursuing classical studies and was graduated from Yale College in 1801. David Clendenin
David Clendenin was a 19th-century American investor, soldier and legislator. He represented Ohio in the United States House of Representatives, U.S. House of Representatives from 1814 until 1817. Early life and career He moved from Harford County, Maryland, to near Struthers, Ohio, Struthers in the Mahoning River Valley of Ohio about 1806, residing in Trumbull County, Ohio. He became an investor with a few others in David Eaton’s early iron and steel blast furnaces in Trumbull County, one of the pioneers in the iron and steel industry. The furnaces operated until 1812 when all the men were drafted to serve in the War of 1812. Those furnaces never operated again, although others were established after the war. The Wake are a British post-punk, synth-pop and later indie pop band, formed in Glasgow in 1981 by Gerard "Caesar" McInulty (formerly of Altered Images), Steven Allen (drums) and Joe Donnelly (bass), the latter replaced by Bobby Gillespie. Steven's sister Carolyn Allen also joined on keyboards, and remained in the band thereafter. Gillespie left the band in 1983, replaced by Martin Cunning and then by Alexander 'Mac' Macpherson. Joseph Vance (Ohio Politician)
Joseph Vance (March 21, 1786 – August 24, 1852) was a Whig politician from the U.S. state of Ohio. He was the 13th governor of Ohio and the first Whig to hold the position. Biography Vance was born in Catfish (now Washington), Pennsylvania. He moved with his father, Joseph C. Vance, a Revolutionary War veteran, to Vanceburg, Kentucky, in 1788, and then to Urbana, Ohio, in 1805. Vance married Mary Lemon in 1807. Career A salt farmer, Vance gained a commission during the War of 1812 and rose quickly from Major to Major General. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1812–1813, 1815–1816 and 1818–1819. Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1820, Vance served seven terms before losing a bid for an eighth term in 1834. Vance ran for governor in 1836 and served a single two-year term, losing a bid for re-election in 1838. Philemon Beecher
Philemon Beecher (March 19, 1776November 30, 1839) was an Anglo-American attorney and legislator who was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio. Biography Philemon Beecher was born in Oxford in the Connecticut Colony, the son of Abraham Beecher and Desire Tolles. Philemon Beecher received a classical education, read law and was admitted to the bar. Beecher moved to Lancaster, Ohio, in 1801 and continued the practice of law, being admitted to the bar while Ohio was still the Northwest Territory. He was the leading lawyer of the Lancaster bar for twenty-five years. It was in his office that lawyer and political figure Thomas Ewing studied law. James Kilbourne
James Kilbourne (October 19, 1770April 9, 1850) was an American surveyor, politician from Ohio, and Episcopalian clergyman. He served two terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1813 to 1817. Early life and career Kilbourne was born in New Britain in the Connecticut Colony, and moved his family to Ohio in 1803, when he founded the city of Worthington, Ohio. In 1804 a group he led founded St. John's Episcopal Church. In 1805 he was appointed United States surveyor of public lands. During the War of 1812, Kilbourne served as colonel of a frontier regiment. In 1991, Worthington Kilbourne High School and Kilbourne Middle School, named after James Kilbourne, opened in the Worthington City School District. He was a trustee of Ohio University from 1804 to 1820.
