Trevor Chute
General Sir Trevor Chute, KCB (31 July 1816 – 12 March 1886) was an Irish-born officer who served in the British Army during the Victorian era. Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Chute joined the British Army in 1832. Posted to British India with the 70th Regiment, he helped deal with the Indian Mutiny of 1854. Sent to the Antipodes, he served in the New Zealand Wars and later in Australia. He returned to New Zealand in 1865 as a major general and commander of all British forces in the country. He led a four-week campaign during the Second Taranaki War to destroy Maori resistance in the Taranaki. The campaign was the last to be carried out in New Zealand by imperial troops. At the end of his service in New Zealand, he went back to Australia. Knighted in 1867, he returned to England in 1870 with the last of the Imperial forces garrisoning Australia. Military History Of New Zealand
The military history of New Zealand is an aspect of the history of New Zealand that spans several hundred years. When first settled by Māori people, Māori almost a millennium ago, there was much land and resources, but war began to break out as the country's carrying capacity was approached. Initially being fought with close range weapons of wood and stone, this continued on and off until Europeans arrived, bringing with them new weapons such as muskets. Colonisation by British Empire, Britain led to the New Zealand Wars in the 19th century in which settler and imperial troops and their Māori allies fought against other Māori and a handful of Pākehā. In the first half of the 20th century, New Zealanders of all races fought alongside Britain in the Boer War and both World Wars. The history of New Zealand ( Aotearoa) dates back to between 1320 and 1350 CE, when the main settlement period started, after it was discovered and settled by Polynesians, who developed a distinct Māori culture. Like other Pacific cultures, Māori society was centred on kinship links and connection with the land but, unlike them, it was adapted to a cool, temperate environment rather than a warm, tropical one. The first European explorer known to visit New Zealand was Dutch navigator Abel Tasman on 13 December 1642. In 1643 he charted the west coast of the North Island, his expedition then sailed back to Batavia without setting foot on New Zealand soil. Charlotte Badger
Charlotte Badger (1778 to after 1843) was a former convict who was on board the ''Venus'' during a mutiny in Tasmania in 1806. Taken to New Zealand, she was rescued by Captain Turnbull of the ''Indispensable (1791 ship), Indispensible'', and eventually she returned to Sydney. In the intervening centuries, a number of writers have contributed to the fiction that she took an active role in the mutiny and she became known – erroneously – as Australia's first female pirate. Early life Badger was born in 1778, the daughter of Thomas and Ann Badger. She was baptised on 31 July 1778. In June 1796, she was convicted at the Worcester Assizes of breaking into a house and stealing four guineas and a Queen Anne's half-crown. It was a capital offence but Badger was later reprieved and sentenced instead to transportation to New South Wales for seven years. Henry Tancred (New Zealand Politician)
Henry John Tancred (1816 – 27 April 1884), also known as Harry Tancred, was a 19th-century New Zealand politician. Early life Tancred was baptised on 14 May 1816 at the Isle of Wight. His father was Sir Thomas Tancred, 6th Baronet and his elder brother was Sir Thomas Tancred, 7th Baronet. He was educated at Rugby School. He served in the Austrian army and fought in Austria, Hungary and Italy. He was severely injured in a fall from a horse and had a speech impairment as a result. New Zealand Back in England to recuperate, he became interested in the Canterbury Association and decided to emigrate. He arrived in Canterbury in December 1850 from Wellington on the ''Barbara Gordon'', just prior to the arrival of the first Canterbury settlers. William Guyton
William Guyton Justice of the peace, JP (1816–1884) was the second Mayor of Wellington, New Zealand in 1843. He obtained this position upon the death of George Hunter (mayor), George Hunter and held until the Borough was abolished by the Government of the United Kingdom, British Government. Family life Guyton was born in Liverpool in 1816. He sailed to New Zealand on the Ridgway owned vessel the ''Coromandel (ship), Coromandel'' which left from London on 10 December 1839 and arrived in Port Nicholson on 29 August 1840. Although not confirmed, Guyton appears to have returned to Middlesex and Lancashire, England around or after 1844, and either returned via New Zealand or went directly to Australia in 1854. Edward Dobson
Edward Dobson (1816/17? – 19 September 1908) was Provincial Engineer for Canterbury Province, New Zealand from 1854 to 1868. Early life Edward Dobson was born in London, probably in 1816 or 1817. His parents were John Dobson, a merchant, and Elizabeth Barker (1787–1875). Collet Dobson Collet (1812–1898) was his brother, Clara Collet (1860–1948) was his niece, and Sophia Dobson Collet (1822–1894) his sister. Collet Barker was an uncle, an elder brother of his mother. By the time he started his apprenticeship as an architect and surveyor in 1832, his father had died. William Daldy
William Crush Daldy (1816 – 5 October 1903) was a 19th-century captain and New Zealand politician. Biography Daldy was born on 20 April 1816 in Rainham, Essex, England. He started going to sea aged 16 on the ''Mayflower'', a ship belonging to his father Samuel Rootsey Daldy, an Ilford coal merchant. His seafaring first brought him to Auckland in July 1841. On 10 December 1840 he sailed from Liverpool in his schooner ''Shamrock'', arriving in Auckland in July 1841, but remained a seafarer. In 1847 he started timber milling near Auckland. From 1849 he was a partner in the shipping firm Combes and Daldy. He was a shareholder of Auckland Timber Co and his son, W C Daldy Jr., was its secretary. In April 1864 the Daldy family sailed to London and in 1865 he became the English agent for the Province. They returned on Combes and Daldy's ship, ''Queen of the North'', in 1866.
