Matz Jenssen
Matz Jenssen (30 October 1760 – 12 August 1813) was a Norwegian businessman. Originally a seamaster, Jenssen settled in Throndhjem in 1790. Here, he founded his own trading company ''Jenssen & Co'', which evolved into a trade dynasty in the city. Upon his death in 1813, his wife Anna, née Schjelderup Dorenfeldt (1763–1846) took over. The couple had four sons and four daughters; his two oldest sons Jens Nicolai and Hans Peter took over the company upon finishing school, while his third son Anthon P. Jenssen became an estate owner. Christian Tønsberg
Nils Christian Tønsberg (7 December 1813 – 6 February 1897) was a Norwegian publisher and author. Christian Tønsberg became one of the larger Norwegian publishers and was best known for illustrated books about Norway. Background Nils Christian Tønsberg was born in Bergen, Norway. He was the son of a ship manager Johan Christian Tønsberg (1788-1830) and Anne Marie Dahl (1788-1837). From the age of 14 he was employed at the office of town clerk and justice secretary and worked as a secretary for several municipal commissions. In September 1834 he was assistant at the Recorder of Bergen. He enrolled in law studies at the University of Christiania graduating with the cand.jur. degree in 1845. Career Tønsberg was employed as clerk in the Treasury Department, working in the office of several Supreme Court lawyers. Jørgen Moe
Jørgen Engebretsen Moe (22 April 1813–27 March 1882) was a Norwegian folklorist, bishop, poet, and author. He is best known for the ''Norske Folkeeventyr'', a collection of Norwegian folk tales which he edited in collaboration with Peter Christen Asbjørnsen. He also served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Kristianssand from 1874 until his death in 1882. Biography Jørgen Engebretsen Moe was born at the farm of Øvre Moe in the municipality of Hole in the traditional district of Ringerike. He was the son of local farmer and politician Engebret Olsen Moe. He first met Asbjørnsen while the two were preparing for exams at Norderhov Rectory and soon found they had a shared interest in folklore. Starting in 1841, Moe traveled almost every summer through the southern parts of Norway, collecting traditions and stories from the people living in the mountainous areas. Augusta Smith
Augusta Schrumpf, née Smith (19 November 1813 – 7 January 1900) was a Norwegian dramatic actress and operatic soprano. She was the prima donna of the national stage of Norway in the first half of the 19th century. She belonged to the pioneer troupe of artists at the Norwegian national stage, and could be regarded as the first opera singer in Norway. Life Augusta Smith was born in Copenhagen, Denmark as the daughter of ''Konsumtionskasserer'' - a lower official - Halvor Smith (1770-1835) and Ellen Marie Lundgren (d. April 1859). Her father was Norwegian, and her mother was Swedish. She married the violinist August Schrumpf in 1832. Career Augusta Schrumpf was engaged at the Strömberg Theatre (later known as the Christiania Theatre) in Oslo from 1829 to 1860. Ivar Aasen
Ivar Andreas Aasen (; 5 August 1813 – 23 September 1896) was a Norwegian philologist, lexicographer, playwright, and poet. He is best known for having assembled one of the two official written versions of the Norwegian language, Nynorsk, from various dialects. Background He was born as Iver Andreas Aasen at Åsen in Ørsta (then Ørsten), in the district of Sunnmøre, on the west coast of Norway. His father, a peasant with a small farm, Ivar Jonsson, died in 1826. The younger Ivar was brought up to farmwork, but he assiduously cultivated all his leisure in reading. An early interest of his was botany. When he was eighteen, he opened an elementary school in his native parish.
