Langdon Cheves
Langdon Cheves ( September 17, 1776 – June 26, 1857) was an American politician, lawyer and businessman from South Carolina. He represented the city of Charleston in the United States House of Representatives from 1810 to 1815, where he played a key role on the home front of the War of 1812. Cheves was a leader among the War Hawk faction of the House. He served as chairman of the Committees on Naval Affairs and Ways and Means under Speaker of the House Henry Clay, then succeeded Clay as Speaker in the war's final stages. After leaving the House, he served as President of the Second Bank of the United States from 1819 to 1822. After leaving public office, Cheves was an active advocate for unified Southern resistance to protective tariffs and any attempt to abolish slavery, though an opponent of unilateral action by South Carolina or any one state. William Mayrant
William Mayrant (March 8, 1765January 23, 1832Find a GravRetrieved on May 27, 2009.) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from South Carolina. William Mayrant was elected in 1814 as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress and served until his resignation on October 21, 1816 (March 4, 1815-October 21, 1816). He was elected to his first and only term as a member of the US House of Representatives, from his home at Stateburg, near what is now Sumter, SC. He represented South Carolina's 9th congressional district. Mayrant voted in favor of the Tariff of 1816, which most southerners opposed because they believed it placed them at a financial disadvantage by unfairly raising prices on northern and European made finished goods, while lowering the price of southern raw materials, especially cotton. John Kershaw (September 12, 1765August 4, 1829) was a U.S. Representative from South Carolina. Born in Camden in the Province of South Carolina, Kershaw attended Rushworth School and Oxford College, England where he studied law. He was the son of Joseph Kershaw, one of the founders of Camden, SC. He married Harriet DuBose in 1812. They were the parents of Major General Joseph Brevard Kershaw, a noted Confederate Army officer. Early years He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Camden, South Carolina. Kershaw engaged in planting and wheat milling and was a tobacco inspector in 1789. In 1790, he served as a member of the Constitutional Convention and served as Judge of the county court of Kershaw when it was first established in 1791. Samuel Farrow (June 8, 1762November 18, 1824) was a U.S. Representative from South Carolina. Born in Prince William County in the Colony of Virginia in 1762, Farrow moved to South Carolina with his father's family, who settled in Spartanburg District in 1765. He served in the Revolutionary War. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced practice in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits near Cross Anchor. The 24th Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina 1810–1812. Farrow was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Thirteenth Congress (March 4, 1813 – March 3, 1815). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1814. He resumed the practice of law. Thomas Moore (South Carolina Congressman)
Thomas Moore (1759July 11, 1822) was a member of the United States House of Representatives and planter from South Carolina. Born in the Spartanburg District of the Province of South Carolina, Moore served during the Revolutionary War, taking part in the Battle of Cowpens at the age of 16. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives to 1794 to 1799. In 1800, he was elected a Democratic-Republican to the seventh congress, serving from 1801 to 1813. He served as a brigadier general in the War of 1812 and afterwards engaged in planting. Moore was one of the founders of the first high schools in Spartanburg District. In 1814, he was elected to the Fourteenth Congress, serving again from 1815 to 1817. Afterwards, he resumed engaging in agricultural pursuits. He owned slaves. He died near Moores Station of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, in 1822 and was interred in Moore's Burying Ground.
