17th Government Of Turkey
The 17th government of Turkey (10 June 1948 – 16 January 1949) was a short-term government in the history of Turkey. It is also known as the ''second Saka government''. Background Hasan Saka of the Republican People's Party (CHP), who was the previous prime minister, resigned on 8 June 1948. However, he was again assigned to form a government. His cabinet was not very different from the previous cabinet. The major addition was Nihat Erim, who was seen as the potential new leader of the party. The 16th government of Turkey (10 September 1947 – 10 June 1948) was a government in the history of Turkey. It is also called the ''first Hasan Saka, Saka government''. Background Recep Peker of the Republican People's Party (CHP), who was the previous prime minister, resigned on 9 September 1947 after a harsh discussions in the parliament. İsmet İnönü, the president, assigned Hasan Saka, a more moderate politician, as the prime minister. Saka's government was, however, similar to that of Peker. The Democrat Party ( Turkish: ''Demokrat Parti'', DP for short) was a centre-right political party in Turkey, and the country's third legal opposition party, after the Liberal Republican Party (Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası) established by Ali Fethi Okyar in 1930, and the National Development Party (Milli Kalkınma Partisi) established by Nuri Demirağ in 1945. In 1983, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Social Security were merged into the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Kasım Gülek (1905 – 1996) was a prominent Turkish statesman credited with being instrumental in entrenching democracy in Turkey by taking politics to the masses. Biography He was born and lived in Adana, Adana Vilayet, Ottoman Empire, until he went away to school in Istanbul, where he studied respectively at Galatasaray High School and Robert College. He then went on to study at Ecole des Sciences Politiques in Paris, France, followed by Columbia University in New York City, New York, United States, where he received his PhD in Economics.
