17th Ali Ibn Abi Talib Division
17th Ali ibn Abi Taleb Division ( fa, لشکر 17 علی ابن ابی طالب) was a division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Iran–Iraq War. It covered Qom, Zanjan, Semnan, and Markazi provinces. After Operation Tariq-ol-Qods, the 17th Brigade of Qom () was established in the Shush area. Fighters were from Qom, Mashhad, Behbahan, and Shush. Its commander was initially Morteza Saffari, who later became the deputy of Fajr Headquarters and was replaced by Hassan Darvish. In July or August 1982, the brigade was renamed to 17th Ali ibn Abi Taleb Brigade (). Since then, forces from Zanjan, Semnan, Markazi provinces constituted the bulk of the unit. In the fourth phase of the Operation Ramadan, Mehdi Zeinoddin was appointed as the new commander of the brigade. Operation Dawn 4 ( fa, عملیات والفجر 4) was an Iranian operation of the Iran–Iraq War launched in October 1983. At the end of the operation Iran had captured a small amount of territory from the Iraqis. Units of Iraq's 1st Corps spent two months in their trenches waiting for the Iranians to attack. The offensive began on the 19 October 1983 and the Iranians and Peshmerga guerrillas of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan conquered about of territory. This included exerted a significant amount of pressure on Penjwen. Saddam Hussein responded with a counterattack, using the Iraqi Republican Guard and poison gas. However, they failed to dislodge the Iranians, who were dug-in and reinforced by Kurdish fighters. Operation Forough Javidan ( fa, عملیات فروغ جاویدان, ''Operation Eternal Light'', MeK's codename) and Operation Mersad ( fa, عملیات مرصاد, ''Operation Ambush'', Iranian codename) were among the last major military operations of the Iran–Iraq War. In July 1988, Iraqis forces and 7,000 militants from the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) invaded Iranian Kurdistan, hoping to capture Kermanshah. Operation Dawn-10 or Walfajr-10 (Persian: عملیات والفجر ۱۰) was a large scale offensive operation launched during the Iran–Iraq War by Iran against Iraq on March 15, 1988 near the final stages of the war's conclusion. It was commanded by the Pasdaran along with the participation of some regular army forces as support. During Operation Dawn-10, Iran changed its operational area from southern to northern Iraq. The siege of Basra, code-named Operation Karbala-5 ( fa, عملیات کربلای ۵ ) or The Great Harvest ( ar, الحصاد الاكبر), was an offensive operation carried out by Iran in an effort to capture the Iraqi port city of Basra in early 1987. This battle, known for its extensive casualties and ferocious conditions, was the biggest battle of the war and proved to be the last major Iranian offensive. Operation Karbala-4 was an Iranian offensive in the Iran–Iraq War on the southern front. The operation was launched after the failure of Operation Karbala-2 and Operation Karbala-3 to move the Iraqi lines in an effort to capture Iraqi territory. Prelude The battle itself was planned and eventually executed by Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The operation would be launched under cover of darkness in order to gain a foothold along the Shatt-al-Arab waterway. Once across, the Iranian forces would go on the offensive and eventually move onto the port city of Basra. The attack would be launched towards the Umm ar-Rasas Island in the Shatt al Arab. In response to the loss of the strategic al-Faw Peninsula during the Iran–Iraq War, the Iraqis pushed into Iran to seize the strategic Iranian city of Mehran to trade for the strategically important territory. The First Battle of al-Faw was a battle of the Iran–Iraq War, fought on the al-Faw peninsula between 10 February and 10 March 1986. The Iranian operation is considered to be one of Iran's greatest achievements in the Iran–Iraq War.
