Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, the mainland territory of which comprises the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Johan Herman Wessel
Johan Herman Wessel (6 October 1742 – 29 December 1785) was an 18th-century Danish-Norwegian poet, satirist and playwright. His written work was characterized by the use of parody and satiric wit. Biography Wessel was born and raised at Vestby in Akershus, Norway. He was the son of Jonas Wessel (1707–1785) and Helene Maria Schumacher (1715–1789). His father was a parish priest. He was one of thirteen children in a family. His younger brothers included mathematician Caspar Wessel (1745–1818) and jurist Ole Christopher Wessel (1744–1794) His sister-in-law was landowner Maren Juel (1749–1815) and naval hero Peter Tordenskjold (1690–1720) was his grand uncle. He entered attended Oslo Cathedral School in 1757 followed by the University of Copenhagen in 1761. At the university, he studied foreign languages. Rosemaling
Rose-painting, , or is a Scandinavian decorative folk painting that flourished from the 1700s to the mid-19th century, particularly in Norway. In Sweden, rose-painting began to be called , c. 1901, for the region where it had been most popular and (''kurbits''), in the 1920s, for a characteristic trait, but in Norway the old name still predominates beside terms for local variants. Rose-painting was used to decorate church walls and ceilings. It then spread to wooden items commonly used in daily life, such as ale bowls, stools, chairs, cupboards, boxes, and trunks. Using stylized ornamentation made up of fantasy flowers, scrollwork, fine line work, flowing patterns and sometimes geometric elements give rose-painting its unique feel. Knut Olavson Mevasstaul (1785–1862) was a Norwegian rose painter (''norsk rosemaler''). He was from Kviteseid in Telemark, Norway. He was trained in the decorative folk art of Rosemaling in the traditional style of Vest-Telemark in Upper Telemark. The Telemark style of decorative, ornamental painting is commonly asymmetrical with motives of leaves and blooming flowers that are varied and irregular. Michel Nielsen Grendahl
Michel Nielsen Grendahl (12 March 1775 - 18 January 1849) was a Norwegian farmer, shipbuilder and politician. Grendahl was born at Rennebu in Sor-Trondelag, Norway. His parents were Niels Mikkelsen Grindal (1739-1811) and Randi Mikkelsdatter Stavne (1745-1814). He grew up on the family farm (''Øvre Grindal i Rennebu'') in the parish of Rennebu. He traveled to Bergen where he first became interested in shipping. In 1806, he traveled to Kristiansund where he engaged in shipbuilding. His business did well but he was determined to return to farming. In 1821, he bought Havstein (''Havstein Gård på Byåsen''), large farm in the Trondheim district of Byåsen. Influenced by the reform teachings of Hans Nielsen Hauge, his farm became a spiritual center for the Haugean Movement (''haugianere''). Gustav Peter Blom (4 July 1785 – 28 October 1869) was a Norwegian civil servant, politician and historian. He was a member of the Norwegian Constitutional Assembly at Eidsvoll during 1814. Blom was born at Hurum in Buskerud, Norway. Blom took his law degree in 1807 and worked as district stipendiary magistrate (''sorenskriver'') in Nordre Jarlsberg. He was later appointed stipendiary magistrate (''byfoged'') and town clerk (''byskriver'') in Drammen.
