Charles Bury, 1st Earl Of Charleville
Charles William Bury, 1st Earl of Charleville FRS, FSA (30 June 1764 – 31 October 1835), known as The Lord Tullamore between 1797 and 1800 and as The Viscount Charleville between 1800 and 1806, was an Irish landowner, antiquarian and politician. Background and education Bury was the son of John Bury, son of William Bury and the Honourable Jane Moore, daughter of John Moore, 1st Baron Moore and sister of Charles Moore, 1st Earl of Charleville. His mother was Catherine Sadleir, daughter of Francis Sadleir, of Sopwell Hall, County Tipperary. His father succeeded to the Charleville estates on the death of his maternal uncle, the Earl of Charleville, in February 1764. He died in August of the same year, only two months after the birth of his son. Warden Flood
Warden Flood (1694 – 16 April 1764) was an Irish judge who held office as Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, but is mainly remembered now as the natural father of the statesman Henry Flood. He was born at Burnchurch in County Kilkenny, son of Francis Flood and Anne Warden. He was educated at Kilkenny College and Trinity College Dublin, taking his degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1714. He entered Middle Temple in 1716 and was called to the Irish Bar in 1720. He was appointed Solicitor-General for Ireland in 1741, Attorney-General for Ireland in 1751, and in 1760 was appointed Chief Justice of the King's Bench for Ireland. He acted as a judge of assize and was briefly Speaker of the Irish House of Lords.Ball p. 221 He became the Member of Parliament (MP) for Callan in 1727. Charles O'Conor (priest)
Charles O'Conor ( ga, Cathal Ó Conchubhair Donn; 1764–1828) was an Irish priest and historical author. He was chaplain and librarian to the Marchioness of Buckingham and catalogued many manuscripts, including the famous Stowe Missal, now in the Royal Irish Academy. His grandfather was the historian Charles O'Connor, his brother the historian Matthew O'Conor. Arthur French (politician)
Arthur French (1764 – 24 November 1820) was an Irish Whig politician. He belonged to the long-established French family of Frenchpark, County Roscommon, who were substantial landowners who also made money in the wine trade. He was the eldest son of Arthur French MP and Alicia Magenis, daughter of Richard Magenis of Dublin and sister of Richard Magenis. He married Margaret Costello, daughter of Edmond Costello of Edmondstown, County Mayo, and had nine children, including Arthur French, 1st Baron de Freyne, John, 2nd Baron and Charles, 3rd Baron. In 1783, he was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for Roscommon County in the Irish House of Commons. After the Act of Union in 1801 he represented Roscommon in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. He was alleged to have been offered an Earldom if he would support the Union of Ireland with Great Britain but refused the honour. Henry Charles Sirr (soldier)
Henry Charles Sirr (1764–1841) was an Anglo-Irish soldier, Town Major (police chief) of Dublin, extortioner, wine merchant and art collector. Sirr played a prominent role in suppressing the Irish republican Society of United Irishmen and their uprising of 1798. He is especially known for the fatal shooting of the United Irishmen leader Lord Edward FitzGerald, who Sirr alleged had been resisting arrest. Early life Sirr was born in Dublin Castle, the son of Major Joseph Sirr, the Town Major (chief of police) of Dublin from 1762 to 1767. Sirr served in the British Army in 1778–1791, returning to Dublin with the rank of lieutenant, and thereafter in the wine trade. A group of Native American Choctaw is among those contributing to the relief effort. The Irish Rebellion of 1798 ( ga, Éirí Amach 1798; Ulster-Scots: ''The Hurries'') was a major uprising against British rule in Ireland. The main organising force was the Society of United Irishmen, a republican revolutionary group influenced by the ideas of the American and French revolutions: originally formed by Presbyterian radicals angry at being shut out of power by the Anglican establishment, they were joined by many from the majority Catholic population. Following some initial successes, particularly in County Wexford, the uprising was suppressed by government militia and yeomanry forces, reinforced by units of the British Army, with a civilian and combatant death toll estimated between 10,000 and 50,000. A French expeditionary force landed in County Mayo in August in support of the rebels: despite victory at Castlebar, they were also eventually defeated. James Hope (Ireland)
James "Jemmy" Hope (August 25, 1764 – February 10, 1847) was a radical democrat in Ireland who organised among tenant farmers, tradesmen and labourers for the Society of the United Irishmen. In the Rebellion of 1798 he fought alongside Henry Joy McCracken at the Battle of Antrim. In 1803 he attempted to renew the insurrection against the British Crown in an uprising co-ordinated by Robert Emmett and the new republican directorate in Dublin. Among United Irishmen, Hope was distinguished by his conviction that "the fundamental question at issue between the rulers and the people" was "the condition of the labouring class". Early life and family Hope was born in Mallusk (parish of Templepatrick), County Antrim. His father, John Hope, a Scottish highlander and linen weaver, had emigrated from Scotland rather than compromise his Presbyterian Covenanter faith. At age ten Hope was hired on a nearby farm.
