Salon (Paris)
The Salon (french: Salon), or rarely Paris Salon (French: ''Salon de Paris'' ), beginning in 1667 was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Between 1748 and 1890 it was arguably the greatest annual or biennial art event in the Western world. At the 1761 Salon, thirty-three painters, nine sculptors, and eleven engravers contributed. Thomas Roberts (painter)
Thomas Roberts (circa 1748-1778) was an Irish landscape artist.The Library of Ireland, from A Dictionary of Artists. published 1913 https://www.libraryireland.com/irishartists/thomas-roberts.php Early life Born into a family of artists in County Waterford, he was the eldest son and fourth child of architect John Roberts and his wife Mary Susannah Sautelle, who was of Huguenot descent. Roberts was baptised on 22 May 1748 in Waterford. Roberts enrolled in the Dublin Society Schools in 1763, winning an award in his first year. He studied landscape painting under James Mannin. Career Thomas would become a student of the Cork painter John Butts and an apprentice of landscape painter George Mullins. He lived in Temple Bar, above the public house that belonged to Mullins' wife, the ''Horseshoe and Magpie''. He went on to exhibit at the Society of Artists from 1766, at age 18, and continued to exhibit there until 1777. Between 1766 and 1773 he exhibited 56 paintings. From 1769 ... Jacob Adam
Jacob Adam (9 October 1748 – 16 September 1811) was an Austrian copper etcher. Adam worked mainly for printing offices, but is best known for his small format portraits of which he created more than 100. He was born and died in Vienna. Adam created miniature portrait etchings of famous people of his day, including Charles-Joseph, 7th Prince of Ligne and the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II; the latter etching is kept in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially "the Met", is the largest art museum in the Americas. Johann Sebastian Bach (painter)
Johann Sebastian Bach (26 September 1748 – 11 September 1778) was a German painter. He was the son of composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and the grandson of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach was born in Berlin. He studied under Adam Friedrich Oeser in Leipzig. In May 1773, he moved to Dresden, and in February 1776 he moved to Hamburg, where his father was Director of Music. In September 1776 he embarked on a study trip to Rome, where he became seriously ill soon after his arrival in February 1777, and died, aged 29, of this unknown ailment in 1778. Bach created mostly brush drawings of idyllic landscapes, bustling with people. His works show the influence of Salomon Gessner. Towards the end of his life, he turned to representations of people and created historical and mythological scenes. He also made vignettes and illustrations of works by Gottlieb Rabener and Christian Felix Weiße. Collections of his works are in Coburg, Dresden, Hamburg, Leipzig and Vienna. References ... Jacques-Louis David
Jacques-Louis David (; 30 August 1748 – 29 December 1825) was a French painter in the Neoclassicism, Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity and severity and heightened feeling, harmonizing with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime. David later became an active supporter of the French Revolution and friend of Maximilien Robespierre (1758–1794), and was effectively a dictator of the arts under the French First Republic, French Republic. Imprisoned after Robespierre's fall from power, he aligned himself with yet another political regime upon his release: that of Napoleon, the First Consul of France. John Carter (architect)
John Carter (1748–1817) was an English draughtsman and architect, who was an early advocate of the revival of Gothic architecture. Life Carter was born on 22 June 1748, the son of Benjamin Carter (d.1766), a marble-carver established in Piccadilly in the West End of London; his father's brother Thomas (d.1795) was also in business as a sculptor of marble. At an early age he was sent to a boarding-school at Battersea, and then to one in Kennington Lane. Leaving school aged about twelve, he went home to his father, making working drawings for the men. In about 1764, following his father's death, Carter was taken into the office of a Joseph Dixon, a surveyor and mason, with whom he remained for some years. In 1774 he was employed to execute drawings of St. Paul's Churchyard for the ''Builders Magazine'', edited by Francis Newbery, for which he was to continue to draw until 1786.
