Anders Sparrman
Anders Sparrman (27 February 1748, Tensta, Uppland – 9 August 1820) was a Swedish naturalist, abolitionist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. Biography left, Miniature of Sparrman at the time of his travels with James Cook. By unknown artist. Sparrman was the son of a clergyman. At the age of nine he enrolled at Uppsala University, beginning medical studies at fourteen and becoming one of the outstanding pupils of Linnaeus. In 1765 he went on a voyage to China as ship's doctor, returning two years later and describing the animals and plants he had encountered. On this voyage he met Carl Gustaf Ekeberg. He sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take up a post as a tutor. When James Cook arrived there later in the year at the start of his second voyage, Sparrman was taken on as assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. After the voyage he returned to Cape Town in July 1775 and practiced medicine, earning enough to finance a journey into the interior. He ... Charlotte Manderström
Virginia Charlotta "Charlotte" Manderström, née ''Duwall'' (1748–1816), was a Swedish lady in waiting and noble. She was the lady in waiting and favorite of the Swedish Queen consort, Sophia Magdalena of Denmark. She was born to the noble Carl Erik Duwall and Virginia Lucretia Duwall. Prior to her marriage, she served as maid of honor to queen Sophia Magdalena. Manderström and her colleague, Maria Aurora Uggla, has been described as the two closest friends and confidants of the queen, who otherwise lived a very reclusive and solitary life with few close friends. It is noted that the famed Sophie Hagman was employed as her maid prior to becoming the mistress of Prince Frederick Adolph. In 1773, she married the courtier Baron Christopher Manderström. By marriage, she automatically lost her office of maid of honor and reportedly feared that she would be sent away. Hedvig Wigert
Hedvig Christina Wigert née ''Falk'' (February 1748 – 4 January 1780) was a Swedish opera singer. She belonged to the pioneer generation of performers of the Royal Swedish Opera. Hedvig Falk belonged to the first group of singers hired at the foundation of the Royal Swedish Opera in Bollhuset in 1773. She was at that point known for her musical talent and referred to as "one for her musical talent already well-known female", and Gustav III wanted her for the part of the goddess Doris in the opening grand opera ''Thetis och Pélée'', an opera in Swedish composed by Francesco Uttini with words by , which was to be performed at the inauguration of the new Opera. The employment of Wigert illustrates social and gender related issues. There was an initial difficulty to enroll female singers because the profession had a low status in the 18th-century. Louis Masreliez
Louis Masreliez (1748 – 19 March 1810), born Adrien Louis Masreliez, was a French born, Swedish painter and interior designer. Biography Masreliez was born in Paris and came to Sweden at the age of 5 in 1753. He was the son of French ornamental sculptor Adrien Masreliez (1717-1806) and the elder brother of sculptor Jean Baptiste Masreliez (1753–1801). He began his education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (''Ritakademien'') at the age of 10. Since the academy did not teach painting, he studied in Stockholm at the workshop of ornament painter Lorens Gottman (1708-1779). In 1769 he was given a study grant which he used to travel to Paris, Bologna and Rome to study. In Rome he spent time with several of the French, Italian and German artists who would shape the Neoclassicism decorative style. Jonas Dryander
Jonas Carlsson Dryander (5 March 1748 – 19 October 1810) was a Swedish botanist. Biography Dryander was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He was the son of Carl Leonard Dryander and Brita Maria Montin. He was a pupil of Carl Linnaeus at Uppsala University. He entered Lund University in 1778 and received his Master of Philosophy in 1778. He arrived in London on 10 July 1777. He became associated with Sir Joseph Banks and, following the death of Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander in 1782, was the librarian of the Royal Society and Vice-President of the Linnean Society of London. Dryander's publications included ''Catalogus bibliothecae historico-naturalis Josephi Banks'' (1796-1800). In 1784, he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The genus ''Dryandra'' was named in his honour by his friend and fellow scientist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743–1828) and Robert Brown named '' Grevillea dryandri'' in his honour.
