2975 Spahr, provisional designation ', is a bright background asteroid from the Flora region of the inner asteroid belt, approximately in diameter. It was discovered on 8 January 1970, by Russian astronomers Hejno Potter and A. Lokalov at the Cerro El Roble Station near Santiago, Chile. The S- or A-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.9 hours. It was named for Timothy Spahr, an American astronomer and former director of the Minor Planet Center. Orbit and classification ''Spahr'' is a non-family asteroid of the main belt's background population when applying the hierarchical clustering method to its proper orbital elements. Based on osculating Keplerian orbital elements, the asteroid has also been classified as a member of the Flora family (), a giant asteroid family and the largest family of stony asteroids in the main-belt. Juliana Spahr (born 1966) is an American poet, critic, and editor. She is the recipient of the 2009 Hardison Poetry Prize awarded by the Folger Shakespeare Library to honor a U.S. poet whose art and teaching demonstrate great imagination and daring. Both Spahr's critical and scholarly studies, i.e., ''Everybody’s Autonomy: Connective Reading and Collective Identity'' (2001), and her poetry have shown Spahr's commitment to fostering a "value of reading" as a communal, democratic, open process. Jean Gurney Fine Spahr (, Fine; 1861 – September 25, 1935) was an American social reformer. A pioneer in the Settlement and community houses in the United States, U.S. settlement movement, she was a co-founder and officer of the College Settlements Association (CSA), and the head of the Rivington Street Settlement in New York City. Early life and education Jean Gurney Fine was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, 1861. Her parents were Lambert Suydam and Mary Ely (Burchard) Fine. Her siblings included the educators, Henry Burchard Fine, John B. Fine, and May Margaret Fine. She graduated from Smith College with a B.A. degree in 1883. Career Spahr taught at Clinton College (Kentucky), Clinton College (Kentucky, 1883-85); and at the Brearley School (New York City, 1885-89). Charles Barzillai Spahr (July 20, 1860 – August 30, 1904) was an American political economist. Author, newspaper publisher and editor, he was also prominently identified with University Settlement work. He numbered among his intimate friends such people as Carl Schurz, Ernest Howard Crosby, and Henry George. Early life and education Charles Barzillai Spahr was born in Columbus, Ohio, July 20, 1860. He was the son of the Rev. Barzillai Nelson, and Elizabeth (Tallman) Spahr. He was the grandson of Gideon and Phoebe (Hegler) Spahr, and of George and Jane (Douglas) Tallman, and a descendant of Spahr, who was born in Basel, Switzerland. Spahr was graduated from Amherst College, in 1881. He studied at Leipzig, 1884–85. 171P/Spahr is a periodic comet in the Solar System. 171P/Spahr was recovered on 20–24 October 2011 at apparent magnitude 20.6 using the Faulkes Telescope South. 171P/Spahr is peaked at about magnitude 18 in 2012. During the 1999 passage the comet brightened to about magnitude 13.5. At perihelion on January 13, 2019 when the comet was 1 AU from Earth, the 3-sigma uncertainty in the comet's Earth distance was ±500 km. Samuel Spahr Laws (March 23, 1824 – January 9, 1921) was an American minister, professor, physician, college president, businessman and inventor best known today as the inventor of the Laws Gold Indicator, a predecessor of the ticker tape machine. He was an 1848 graduate and class valedictorian of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and a member of the Alpha chapter of Beta Theta Pi, founded nine years before his graduation in 1839. Life and career Westminster College Samuel Spahr Laws became a professor at Westminster College in 1854. At the college's first commencement in June 1855, the Board of Trustees elected Laws to the position of president of the college.
