Cabin Of Peter The Great
The cabin of Peter the Great (Russian language, Russian: ''Domik Petra I'' or ''Domik Petra Pervogo'' or ''Domik Petra Velikogo'') is a small wooden house which was the first St Petersburg "palace" of Tsar Peter the Great. The log cabin was constructed in three days in May 1703, by soldiers of the Semyonovskiy Regiment. At that time, the new St. Petersburg was described as "a heap of villages linked together, like some plantation in the West Indies". The date of its construction is now considered to mark the foundation of the city. The design is a combination of an izba, a traditional Russian countryside house typical of the 17th century, and the Tsar's beloved Dutch Baroque, later to evolve into the Petrine Baroque. Peter built similar ''domiki'' elsewhere in Russia - for example, in Voronezh, and Vologda. The wooden cabin in St. Petersburg covers only and contains three rooms - living room, bedroom, and study. Maria De Dominici
Suor Maria de Dominici (6 December 1645 – 18 March 1703) was a Maltese painter, sculptor, and a Carmelite tertiary nun. Born into a family of artists based in the city of Birgu (Vittoriosa), she was the daughter of a goldsmith and appraiser for the Knights of Malta. Two of her brothers, Raimondo de Dominici and Francesco de Dominici, were painters. Raimondo's son Bernardo would write a contemporary art history book that included references to his aunt Maria. Biography During her teens, de Dominici studied under the painter and sculptor Mattia Preti, who was painting and sculpting the interior of St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta at the time. She is believed to have contributed, and is specifically recorded as assisting Preti on his best known work, a series of paintings depicting the life and martyrdom of St John the Baptist (1661–1666), which decorates the vaults of the co-Cathedral. William Taverner (artist)
William Taverner (1703 – 20 October 1772) was an English judge and amateur landscape artist. Life Taverner was the son of dramatist William Taverner (d. 1731) and was articled (in the legal sense) to his father (a judge) on 5 April 1720. Like his father, he became a procurator-general of the Arches Court - the ecclesiastical court of the province of Canterbury, based in London. He devoted his leisure time to art, and according to Redgrave,Redgrave, Samuel. A Dictionary of Artists of the English School' (G. Bell, 1878) p. 424. 'His drawings are chiefly in body colour, imitating the Italian masters, mostly woody scenes, and, though clever, do not by any means maintain the great reputation which he enjoyed in his own day.' He died on 20 October 1772 and a writer in the 'Gentleman's Magazine' (p. 496) called him "one of the best landscape-painters England ever produced, but as he painted only for amusement, his paintings are very rare, and will bear a high price". Andrea Soldi
Andrea Soldi (1703–1771) was an Italian portraitist active in Britain. Life The only remaining source for this painter's early years is George Vertue, who in 1738 stated he was "about thirty-five or rather more", had been born in Florence and had come to England in about 1736 on the advice of British merchants belonging to the Levant Company, who had commissioned their portraits from him during his travels in the Middle East. From 1738 to 1744 he won much success in London's art market and among Italophile noblemen back from their Grand Tour, being preferred to both English portrait practice (fluctuating between Rococo and Kneller-like styles) and to other Italian portraitists in England at the time, such as the Cavaliere Rusca (worked in London 1738–39), and Andrea Casali (worked in London 1741–66). Beginning "above thirty portraits" from April to August 1738 alone (according to Vertue), Soldi's only serious rival was Jean-Baptiste van Loo (in London 1737–42). Part ... Gaetano Sabatini
Gaetano Sabatini (1703–1734; or 1731), also known as ''il Mutarolo'' (or ''Il Mutolo'') due to his deaf-mutism, was an Italian draftsman and Baroque painter. Born in Bologna to a domestic worker for the aristocratic Marescalchi family, he perfected his style first in drawing, then in painting. The painter Francesco Monti mentored him as a painter. Ignazio Hugford
''A miracle of St. Francis of Paola'' by Hugford. Ignazio Hugford, or Ignatius Heckford (1703–1778), was an Italian painter active mostly in Tuscany in an early Neoclassic style. Life and work Ignazio Hugford was born in Pisa, the son of a resident English watchmaker who worked for the House of Medici. Hugford was at the age of 9 an apprentice with Anton Domenico Gabbiani. In 1745, he painted over a dozen canvases for the refectory of the Benedictine Abbey of Vallombrosa, where his brother, Ferdinando Enrico, became abbot. Hugford was also instrumental in the development of techniques for scagliola. Hugford joined the ''Accademia del Disegno'' of Florence, and published a biography on his mentor. He was also involved in designs for works in scagliola. Among his masterpieces in painting is the '' Countess Matilde Donates her Riches to the Church'' in the church of San Bartolommeo in Pantano in Pistoia.
