16th Saskatchewan Legislature
The 16th Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was elected in the Saskatchewan general election held in October 1967. The assembly sat from February 15, 1968, to May 25, 1971. The Liberal Party led by Ross Thatcher formed the government. The New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Woodrow Lloyd formed the official opposition. 1967 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1967 Saskatchewan general election was held on October 11, 1967, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Liberal Party of Saskatchewan, led by Premier Ross Thatcher, was re-elected with a slightly larger majority in the legislature and a larger share of the popular vote. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation had changed its name to the New Democratic Party to match the change that had already been made at the federal level. Still led by former Premier Woodrow Lloyd, the NDP also won an increased share of the popular vote but lost one of the seats that the CCF had won in the previous election. The Liberal and NDP gains in the popular vote came at the expense of the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan of Martin Pederson, which lost about half of its votes. Al Matsalla
Adolph Sylvester "Al" Matsalla (March 22, 1926 – May 18, 2015) was a Canadian educator, municipal administrator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Canora from 1967 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. Life and career Matsalla was born in Buchanan, Saskatchewan, the son of Victor Anton Matsalla and Mary Balawyder, both natives of Poland, and grew up on a farm in the area. Matsalla was educated in Buchanan, in Yorkton, at the Saskatoon Teacher's College and at the University of Saskatchewan, where he completed a program in municipal administration. He taught school from 1943 to 1953 and then became secretary-treasurer for the rural municipality of Buchanan. In 1948, he married Anne Pura. Kelvington-Wadena is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada, in the east-central region. It was created in 1975 from Wadena and Kelvington. John Rissler Messer
John Rissler "Jack" Messer (born May 26, 1941) is a farmer and former political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Kelsey from 1967 to 1971, Tisdale-Kelsey from 1971 to 1975 and Kelsey-Tisdale from 1975 to 1980 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, the son of William Frederick Messer and Margaret Elizabeth Rissler, and was educated there and in Vancouver, British Columbia. Messer worked in Vancouver before continuing his studies at the University of British Columbia and the University of Saskatchewan. He then returned to Tisdale and settled on a farm near the town. Kelsey was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, encompassing the towns of Hudson Bay and Carrot River. The district was named after 17th century explorer Henry Kelsey. Created before the 12th Saskatchewan general election in 1952, this riding was combined with part of the Melfort-Tisdale district (as " Tisdale-Kelsey") before the 17th Saskatchewan general election in 1971. Mathieu Theodore "Matt" Breker (February 15, 1928 – November 20, 2008) was a farmer, pharmacist and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Humboldt from 1964 to 1971 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Englefeld, Saskatchewan and was educated in Humboldt and at the University of Saskatchewan, receiving a B.A. and a BSc in pharmacy. Breker was defeated by Edwin Tchorzewski Edwin Laurence Tchorzewski (April 22, 1943 – June 6, 2008) was a Canadian politician, former Saskatchewan finance minister and member of the Legislative Assembly for 25 years. Humboldt was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in central Saskatchewan, this constituency was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. Robert Andrew Heggie
Robert Andrew Heggie, (May 13, 1915 – July 23, 2000) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Hanley from 1967 to 1971 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan and was educated in Kelliher and at the Regina Normal School. Heggie taught school in Punnichy and Raymore. In 1938, he married Evelyn Rutherford. He served as a radar technician with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Heggie then attended the University of Saskatchewan, receiving a law degree, and was called to the Saskatchewan bar in 1950. He practised law in Saskatoon and then served as a judge in the Magistrate Court. From 1954 to 1963, he was an alderman for Saskatoon. In 1963, Heggie was named Queen's Counsel. Lionel Philias Coderre
Lionel Philias Coderre (April 15, 1915 – August 3, 1995) was a merchant, electrician and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Gravelbourg from 1956 to 1971 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, as a Liberal. He was born in Coderre, Saskatchewan, the son of Eudore Coderre and Clodia Charbonneau, and was educated in Coderre and at the College Mathieu in Gravelbourg. From 1937 to 1939, Coderre worked at a nurse at the Provincial Hospital in Weyburn. He served in the South Saskatchewan Regiment during World War II, attained the rank of Major and fought in the Dieppe Raid in 1942. He was twice mentioned in dispatches. George Gordon Leith
George Gordon Leith (June 18, 1923 – May 31, 1996) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Elrose from 1964 to 1971 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the son of John Alexander Leith and Florence Turner, and grew up on the family farm near Glamis. Leith studied at the University of Saskatchewan. He served in the Canadian Army and then the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. In 1945, he married Beryl Kathleen Philion. Leith was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1960; he was elected in 1964 and again in 1967 but was defeated by Hayden Owens when he ran for reelection in 1971.
