Niue Assembly
The Niue Assembly ( niu, Niue Fono Ekepule) is the legislature of Niue. It consists of 20 members; 14 representatives of the villages and 6 elected on a common roll. Members are directly elected by universal suffrage, and serve a three-year term. Niue follows the Westminster system of government, with the Premier elected by the Assembly and the Cabinet drawn from it. History The Assembly is descended from the Island Council established under the Cook Islands Act 1915. This was disbanded in 1959 and reconstituted as the Assembly, which was successively granted greater control. The Assembly assumed full law-making power within the constitution upon self-government in 1974. The Assembly is physically located in Alofi. Bill Vakaafi Motufoou is a Niuean politician and former Cabinet Minister. Motufoou was the General Secretary for the Mutalau Village Council and Committee Member of the Niue Island Organic Farming Association (NIOFA) before entering politics. He was first elected into the Niue Assembly as Assemblyman for the Village of Mutalau in the 1999 Niuean general election. He was re-elected at the 2002 election and appointed Minister of Works, Agriculture and Fisheries in the government of Young Vivian. In 2004 he was the Niuean delegate at the senior officers meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He was re-elected in 2005 and reappointed to Cabinet. He was re-elected unopposed at the 2008 election, but not appointed to Toke Talagi's cabinet. Avatele
Avatele, formerly known as Oneonepata Matavaihala, is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located on the southwest coast, with a population of 143 residents as of 2017. Geography Avatele Beach, the village's main sea track, stretches along the coast of Avatele Bay and is the largest and most well-known beach on the island. Although the sand is mostly of the coarse kind it is an important swimming and picnic site for both tourists and residents. Prior to the construction of the Sir Robert Rex Wharf and Hannan International Airport in Alofi, Avatele Beach was the principal landing place for many visitors to the island. Billy Talagi
Billy Graham Talagi is a Niuean politician and former Member of the Niue Assembly. Career Talagi was first elected to the Niue Assembly in a 1997 by-election. He has represented the village of Avatele in the Niue Assembly continuously since 1999. In 2005, 2008, and 2014 he was elected unopposed. In 2014 he was made Minister of Natural Resources in the Cabinet of Toke Talagi. In 2017 he was made Minister for Education and Social Services. In 2019 he served as Acting Prime Minister while Toke Talagi was receiving medical treatment in New Zealand. In May 2018 Talagi was discharged without conviction after pleading guilty to assaulting MP Terry Coe outside the Niuean Assembly. He contested the common roll in the 2020 Niuean general election but failed to win a seat. Opili Talafasi is a former Niuean politician who served as a Member of the Niue Assembly for 33 years, from 1990 to 2023. Talafasi was first elected to the Assembly in the 1990 Niuean general election General elections were held in Niue on 7 April 1990, seven months after Cyclone Ofa caused considerable damage to the island. Joan Sisiati Tahafa Viliamu (22 March 1966 – 25 November 2022) was a Niuean politician and Cabinet minister. Viliamu was born in Tuapa and educated at Matalave Primary School and Niue High School Intermediate. She worked as a public servant and businesswoman before being elected to the Niue Assembly on the common roll at the 2011 election. Alofi South
Alofi is the capital of the Pacific Ocean island nation of Niue. With a population of 597 in 2017, Alofi has the distinction of being the second smallest national capital city in terms of population (after Ngerulmud, capital of Palau). Liku, Niue
Liku is one of the fourteen villages of Niue, located close to the easternmost part of the island. It lies due east of the capital, Alofi, and its population at the 2017 census was 98.
