The list of Norwegian monarchs ( no, kongerekken or ''kongerekka'') begins in 872: the traditional dating of the Battle of Hafrsfjord, after which victorious King Harald Fairhair merged several petty kingdoms into that of his father. Named after the homonymous geographical region, Harald's realm was later to be known as the Kingdom of Norway. Christian IV
Christian IV (12 April 1577 – 28 February 1648) was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Holstein and Schleswig from 1588 until his death in 1648. His reign of 59 years, 330 days is the longest of Danish monarchs and Scandinavian monarchies. A member of the House of Oldenburg, Christian began his personal rule of Denmark in 1596 at the age of 19. He is remembered as one of the most popular, ambitious, and proactive Danish kings, having initiated many reforms and projects. Christian IV obtained for his kingdom a level of stability and wealth that was virtually unmatched elsewhere in Europe. He engaged Denmark in numerous wars, most notably the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), which devastated much of Germany, undermined the Danish economy, and cost Denmark some of its conquered territories. Enevold Kruse
Enevold Kruse (October 28, 1554 – March 8, 1621) was a Danish nobleman who served as Governor-general of Norway from 1608 to 1618. After studying abroad, including in Helmstedt, Germany, he was employed in 1578 at the Danish chancery, and his career advanced rapidly. He served in the Danish Treasury (responsible for accounting, payment and collection of customs duties and taxes, as well as management of state property, including forests, roads, and buildings) beginning in 1582 and retained that position until 1608. In 1608, he was named feudal lord to Akershus in Norway, Governor-general of Norway, and a member of the Danish national council. He served as commander for the Norwegian forces during the Kalmar War between Denmark-Norway and Sweden from 1611 to 1613. As Governor-general, he accomplished relatively little in his latter years, falling into disagreement with Norwegian nobleman Jens Bjelke, who was the Chancellor of Norway. Margareta Huitfeldt
Margareta Huitfeldt (5 November 1608 – 16 November 1683) was a Norwegian-Swedish noblewoman, estate owner and philanthropist. She was the prime benefactor of Hvitfeldtska gymnasiet in Gothenburg, Sweden. Biography Margareta Huitfeldt was born at the Skjelbred farm in the parish of Fiskum in the district of Eiker in Buskerud, Norway. She was the only child of the Danish noble Hartvig Andersen Huitfeldt (1582-1637) and Norwegian noble Bente Jonsdotter Schack (ca.1594-1622). In 1635, she married Danish noble Thomas Iverssön Dyre (1605–1651). Of their three children, only their son Iver Dyre (1644-1663) lived past infancy. She became one of the greatest land owners in Scandinavia as the heir of her parents and her spouse. Most of her properties were situated in Bohuslän, at that time a province of Norway. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. Hallvard Gunnarssøn
Hallvard Gunnarssøn (c.1550 – 1608) was a Norwegian educator and author. Gunnarsson was born at Sarpsborg in Østfold. He was a pupil at the Oslo Cathedral School and later was a student at the University of Rostock. He was enrolled in 1566 and took his magister degree in 1572. Later he also studied in Wittenberg. He lectured at the Oslo Cathedral School from 1577 until his death in 1608.
