159th Fighter Aviation Regiment
The 159th Tallinn Red Banner Fighter Aviation Regiment () was a fighter regiment of the Soviet Air Force during World War II and the Cold War. Formation and World War II The 159th Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed between 24 September and 20 November 1940 at the Grivochki airfield in Dnovsky District, part of the Air Forces of the Leningrad Military District. Under the command of Major Ivan Voronin, the regiment included four squadrons, organized according to shtat ( table of organization and equipment) 15/21. The regiment was formed from pilots of the 44th and 49th Fighter Aviation Regiments and the 161st Reserve Aviation Regiment, equipped with the Polikarpov I-16, in accordance with a directive dated 25 June 1940 expanding the air force. The Soviet Air Forces ( rus, Военно-воздушные силы, r=Voyenno-vozdushnyye sily, VVS; literally "Military Air Forces") were one of the air forces of the Soviet Union. The other was the Soviet Air Defence Forces. The Air Forces were formed from components of the Imperial Russian Air Service in 1917, and faced their greatest test during World War II. The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. The Karelian Front russian: Карельский фронт) was a front (a formation of Army Group size) of the Soviet Union's Red Army during World War II, and operated in Karelia. Wartime The Karelian Front was created in August 1941 when Northern Front was split into Karelian Front and Leningrad Front to take account of the different military developments and requirements on the Leningrad approaches versus those along the Finnish border to the Arctic. Lavochkin La-5
The Lavochkin La-5 (Лавочкин Ла-5) was a Soviet fighter aircraft of World War II. It was a development and refinement of the LaGG-3, replacing the earlier model's inline engine with the much more powerful Shvetsov ASh-82 radial engine. During its time in service, it was one of the Soviet Air Force's most capable types of warplane, able to fight German designs on an equal footing. Development The La-5 descended from the LaGG-1 and LaGG-3, aircraft designed by Vladimir Gorbunov before the Second World War. The LaGG-1 was underpowered, and the LaGG-3 - with a lighter airframe and a stronger engine did not solve the problem.
