Lord Of Ireland
The Lordship of Ireland ( ga, Tiarnas na hÉireann), sometimes referred to retroactively as Norman Ireland, was the part of Ireland ruled by the King of England (styled as "Lord of Ireland") and controlled by loyal Anglo-Norman lords between 1177 and 1542. The lordship was created following the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169–1171. It was a papal fief, granted to the Plantagenet kings of England by the Holy See, via ''Laudabiliter''. As the Lord of Ireland was also the King of England, he was represented locally by a governor, variously known as the Justiciar, Lieutenant, Lord Lieutenant or Lord Deputy. The kings of England claimed lordship over the whole island, but in reality the king's rule only ever extended to parts of the island. Henry VIII
Henry VIII (28 June 149128 January 1547) was King of England from 22 April 1509 until his death in 1547. Henry is best known for his six marriages, and for his efforts to have his first marriage (to Catherine of Aragon) annulled. His disagreement with Pope Clement VII about such an annulment led Henry to initiate the English Reformation, separating the Church of England from papal authority. He appointed himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and dissolved convents and monasteries, for which he was excommunicated by the pope. Henry is also known as "the father of the Royal Navy" as he invested heavily in the navy and increased its size from a few to more than 50 ships, and established the Navy Board. Domestically, Henry is known for his radical changes to the English Constitution, ushering in the theory of the divine right of kings in opposition to papal supremacy. John Óge Kirwan
John Óge Kirwan (aka ''Jhonock Kirwan''), fl. 1530–1531, Mayor of Galway. The Ó Ciardhubháin family moved from Dunmore, County Galway to Galway town in the 1480s following a land dispute with Baron Athenry. The then head of the family was William Ó Ciardhubháin, whose eldest son, Thomas, became Mayor in 1534, while his second son, Patrick, became first Warden of Galway. John Óge's relationship to these men is unknown, but he was the first member of the family to attain significant political office in the Anglo-Irish town of Galway. Mayor Of Galway
The office of Mayor of Galway is an honorific title used by the of Galway City Council. The council has jurisdiction throughout its administrative area of the city of Galway which is the largest city in the province of Connacht, in Ireland. The current mayor is Clodagh Higgins, ( FG). Election to the office The Mayor is elected to office annually by Councillors of Galway City Council from amongst its members. There is no popular vote. Up to 1841, Mayors were elected in August and took office in September. There was a strong tradition of festivities to mark this start of a new municipal year. Current practice is for the term of office to begin in June with the former Mayor presenting the Chain of Office to the incoming Mayor, thus formally inaugurating a new term. Richard Mór Burke
Ricarde Mór Burke, 9th Clanricarde or Mac William Uachtar (; ; died 1530) was an Irish chieftain and noble. Background Burke was the second son of Ulick Fionn Burke, 6th Clanricarde (d.1509) and Slaine Ni Con Mara (Slany MacNamara), succeeding as chieftain in 1520 upon the death of his brother, Ulick Óge Burke, 8th Clanricarde (d.1520). Career In 1522 he was part of a confederation of Connacht forces that marched to Sligo to give battle to the O'Donnells, who were conquering north Connacht. However, the expedition fell apart without a fight after the failure of Conn Bacach O'Neill to defeat O'Donnell. Family Burke married Margaret Butler, daughter to Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond (Ireland). He was succeeded by the grandson of his uncle Edmund (d.1466), John mac Richard Mór Burke, 10th Clanricarde (d.1536), who ruled till 1536. Clanricarde (; ), also known as Mac William Uachtar (Upper Mac William) or the Galway Burkes, were a fully Gaelicised branch of the Hiberno-Norman House of Burgh who were important landowners in Ireland from the 13th to the 20th centuries. Territory The territory, in what is now County Galway, Ireland, stretched from the barony of Clare in the north-west along the borders of County Mayo, to the River Shannon in the east. Territories Clannricarde claimed dominion over included Uí Maine, Kinela, de Bermingham's Country, Síol Anmchadha and southern Sil Muirdeagh were at times at war.
