14th Legislative Assembly Of Saskatchewan
The 14th Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was elected in the Saskatchewan general election held in June 1960. The assembly sat from February 9, 1961, to March 18, 1964. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) led by Tommy Douglas formed the government. Woodrow Lloyd became Premier and CCF party leader in November 1961 after Douglas became leader of the federal New Democratic Party. The Liberal Party led by Ross Thatcher formed the official opposition. Everett Irvine Wood served as speaker for the assembly until 1962. 1960 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1960 Saskatchewan general election was held on June 8, 1960, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation of Thomas C. Douglas campaigned promising Medicare, a public medical insurance and delivery plan for all of Saskatchewan, and it was re-elected with a slightly increased majority. The CCF won despite organized opposition from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, which told voters that Medicare would take freedom of choice away from patients and would cause doctors to leave the province. A year later, Douglas passed legislation making Saskatchewan the first province in Canada to have Medicare. The same year, Douglas resigned as leader of the CCF to become leader of the federal New Democratic Party. Canora is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, centered on the town of Canora. This constituency was created before the 2nd Saskatchewan general election in 1908. Dissolved in 1934, the district was reconstituted before the 9th Saskatchewan general election in 1938. Mary John Batten
Mary John Batten (née Fodchuk; August 30, 1921 – October 9, 2015) was a Canadian lawyer, judge and political figure in Saskatchewan. She represented Humboldt from 1956 to 1964 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. She was the first woman of Ukrainian origin to be elected to a Canadian provincial parliament. Humboldt (provincial Electoral District)
Humboldt was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in central Saskatchewan, this constituency was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. Incorporated as a city in 2000, Humboldt (pop. 4,998) was the largest centre in the riding. Robert Alexander Walker
Robert Alexander Walker, (March 6, 1916 – March 28, 1989) was a Canadian lawyer who served in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1948 to 1967. Walker was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, the son of G.H. Walker and Jean McMillan, and was educated in Mazenod and at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1941, he married Rosa Rebecca Nagel. First elected to the Saskatchewan assembly as the CCF member for Hanley constituency in the 1948 general election, he went on to re-election in 1952, and 1956. In 1956 he joined the cabinet of Premier Tommy Douglas as Attorney General and Provincial Secretary. He continued in those roles following his re-election in 1960. After Douglas left to lead the federal NDP in 1961, Woodrow Lloyd became premier and the first universal medical care plan in Canada was introduced after the doctor's strike. Lionel Philias Coderre
Lionel Philias Coderre (April 15, 1915 – August 3, 1995) was a merchant, electrician and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Gravelbourg from 1956 to 1971 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, as a Liberal. He was born in Coderre, Saskatchewan, the son of Eudore Coderre and Clodia Charbonneau, and was educated in Coderre and at the College Mathieu in Gravelbourg. From 1937 to 1939, Coderre worked at a nurse at the Provincial Hospital in Weyburn. He served in the South Saskatchewan Regiment during World War II, attained the rank of Major and fought in the Dieppe Raid in 1942. He was twice mentioned in dispatches. After the war, Coderre owned and operated the local power plant and a hardware store / electrical contracting business in Coderre. Olaf Turnbull
Olaf Alexander Turnbull (December 30, 1917 – March 15, 2004) was a farmer, educator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Elrose from 1960 to 1964 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born near Kindersley, Saskatchewan, the son of Harry Gordon Turnbull and Ingaborg Swanson, and was educated locally, going on to earn a BSc in Agricultural Economics from the University of Saskatchewan. Turnbull served on the council for the rural municipality of Kindersley and was also a director and vice-president for the Saskatchewan Farmers' Union. In 1945, he married Alice Turner. Turnbull was a candidate for the leadership of the Saskatchewan CCF in 1961. Elrose was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in southwestern Saskatchewan, this constituency was centred on the town of Elrose. Isidore Charles Nollet
Isidore Charles "Toby" Nollet (November 18, 1898 – April 29, 1988) was an American-born rancher and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Cut Knife from 1944 to 1964 and Cut Knife-Lloydminster from 1964 to 1967 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. Biography He was born in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota and was educated at Saint Benedict's Academy and Saint Thomas Military College in Minnesota. Nollet served overseas with the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. After the war, with his father, he moved to Freemont, Saskatchewan, where he established a ranch that raised Aberdeen Angus cattle. Nollet served as reeve of the rural municipality of Hillsdale.
