140th Georgia General Assembly
The 140th Georgia General Assembly met from January 9, 1989, until January 14, 1991, at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. Libertarians, and occasionally others, run candidates in elections. However, for the 1989-90 session of the General Assembly, only the two major parties were successful in electing legislators to office. The Great Seal of the State of Georgia is a device that has historically been used to authenticate government documents executed by the state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. The first great seal of the state was specified in the Georgia (U.S. state) Constitution, State Constitution of 1777, and its current form was adopted in 1799 with alterations in 1914. Its specifications are currently spelled out by statute. Description The original seal from 1777 was specified as such: "The great seal of this State shall have the following device: on one side of a scroll, whereon shall be engraved “The Constitution of the State of Georgia;” and the motto “Pro bono publico.” On the other side, an elegant house, and other buildings, fields of corn, and meadows covered with sheep and cattle; a river running through the same, with a ship under full sail, and the motto, “Deus nobis haec otia fecit.” On February 8, 1799 an Act of the Legislature stated the seal as "On the one side ... J. Thomas "Tom" Coleman, Jr. (September 8, 1928 – June 4, 2014) was an American politician and businessman. Early life and education Tom Coleman was born in Savannah, Georgia, on September 8, 1928. He was a graduate of Benedictine Military School. Coleman received his bachelor's degree from Georgia Institute of Technology where he was captain of the football team. After graduation, Coleman stayed on at Georgia Tech as a physics teacher and football coach. Coleman enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an infantry captain during the Korean War, Korean conflict and, in later years, the U.S. Army Reserve. Anne Mueller (Georgia Politician)
Dame Anne Elisabeth Mueller, DCB (15 October 1930 – 8 July 2000) was a British civil servant and academic. She was Second Permanent Secretary at the Cabinet Office from 1984 to 1987 and then at HM Treasury from 1987 to 1990. She was Chancellor of De Montfort University from June 1991 until 1995. She was the first woman to become a Permanent Secretary at HM Treasury; the second was Sharon White in 2013. Dorothy Felton
Dorothy Felton ( ''née'' Wood; March 1, 1929 – February 19, 2008) was an American politician who was the first Republican woman elected to the Georgia General Assembly. She was elected to represent District 43 in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974, and continued to do so until retiring in 2000. Biography Felton was born Dorothy Jean Wood in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 1, 1929, to Ima Sue Chronister and George F. Wood. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 1950 with a bachelor's degree, she worked as a journalist for the ''Tulsa Tribune''. She married Jethro Jerome Felton Jr. in 1953, and they later moved to the Atlanta metro area. Johnny Isakson
John Hardy Isakson (December 28, 1944 – December 19, 2021) was an American businessman and politician who served as a United States senator from Georgia from 2005 to 2019 as a member of the Republican Party. He represented in the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2005. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Isakson served in the Georgia Air National Guard (1966–1972) and graduated from the University of Georgia. Denmark Groover Jr. (June 30, 1922 – April 18, 2001) was an American politician who served in the state of Georgia's House of Representatives. Early life Groover was born in Quitman, Georgia, on June 30, 1922, to Mary Porter McCall and Denmark Groover Sr. He was educated in the public schools in Quitman. His father was a salesman who sold mules, insurance, and watermelons.
