''12 Play'' is the debut solo studio album by American R&B and soul singer-songwriter R. Kelly; it was released on November 9, 1993, by Jive Records. The album follows his tenure with R&B group Public Announcement, with whom he released one album, ''Born into the 90's'' (1992). It went on to top the R&B albums chart for nine weeks straight, while reaching the second position on the US ''Billboard'' 200 chart. The album features four singles including the sexually-themed singles "Bump n' Grind" (US, number 1), " Your Body's Callin'" (US, number 13), and the more overtly direct " Sex Me, Pts. 1 & 2" (US, number 20). The album serves as the first of a trilogy of albums Kelly released under the "''12 Play''" moniker including ''TP-2.com'' (2000) and '' TP-3: Reloaded'' (2005). Contemporary R&B
Contemporary R&B (or simply R&B) is a popular music genre that combines rhythm and blues with elements of pop, soul, funk, hip hop, and electronic music. The genre features a distinctive record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, pitch corrected vocals, and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. Electronic influences are becoming an increasing trend and the use of hip hop or dance-inspired beats are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may be reduced and smoothed out. Contemporary R&B vocalists often use melisma, and since the mid-1980s, R&B rhythms have been combined with elements of hip hop culture and music and pop culture and pop music. Glenn Jones (born September 27, 1962 in Jacksonville, Florida) is an American R&B/soul singer. He is best known for his songs "Show Me", "We've Only Just Begun (The Romance Is Not Over)" and "Here I Go Again" which reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1991/1992 as well as the track "I've Been Searching (Nobody Like You)". Career Jones started his career as a gospel singer, working and recording with the Florida-based gospel group, the Modulations, before managing a successful move into the R&B field. Gerald Edward Levert (July 13, 1966 – November 10, 2006) was an Americans, American singer-songwriter and producer. Levert was best known for singing with his brother, Sean Levert, and friend Marc Gordon of the vocal group LeVert. Levert was also a member of LSG (band), LSG, a supergroup comprising Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, and himself. Levert is the son of Eddie Levert, who is the lead singer of the R&B/soul music, soul vocal group the O'Jays. Background Released as the "sequel" to Kelly's '' 12 Play'', ''TP-2.com'' had party songs, relationship-themed ballads and a gospel-influenced song, but it still had Kelly's trademark sensuality with songs including "The Greatest Sex" and "Strip for You".
