The district was made in recognition of the Oglethorpe Plan, a unique sort of urban planning begun by James Oglethorpe at the city's founding and propagated for the first century of its growth. The plan of the historic portions of Savannah is based on the concept of a ward, as defined by James Oglethorpe. Each ward had a central square, around which were arrayed four ''trust lots'' and four ''tythings''. John Stoddard (businessman)
John Stoddard (March 11, 1809 – July 5, 1879) was an American businessman based in Savannah, Georgia, where he was a cotton merchant and planter. He was also president of the Georgia Historical Society from 1867 to 1868, having been its first vice-president between 1864 and 1867. Career In 1851, Stoddard was elected a director of the Augusta & Waynesboro Railroad. He was elected president of Evergreen Cemetery Company in 1872. It is now part of Bonaventure Cemetery. At the time of his death, Stoddard had been an elder of Savannah's Independent Presbyterian Church for 35 years. Personal life Stoddard was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, to Solomon Stoddard (1771–1860) and Sarah Tappan (1771–1852), but later moved to Savannah, Georgia. Eugene Kelly (banker)
Eugene Kelly (November 25, 1808 – December 19, 1894) was an Irish-American merchant, banker, and philanthropist who founded corporations in San Francisco and New York City. Eugene Kelly was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, the son of Thomas Boye O'Kelly. At the age of twenty-four he emigrated to the United States, and became a clerk in the mercantile house of Donnelly Bros, New York. After a few years, he removed to Maysville, Kentucky, and went into business, but later on established himself in St. Louis. When the California Gold Rush began, he saw the opportunity and went to San Francisco in the latter part of 1849, opening a mercantile establishment there in partnership with Joseph A. Donohoe, Daniel T. Murphy and Adam Grant. After ten years of business, the firm dissolved, and Kelly took part in founding the Pacific Coast banking house of Donohoe, Ralston & Co., in San Francisco, and the firm of Eugene Kelly & Co., in New York. Hyman Witcover
Hyman Wallace Witcover (July 16, 1871 – October 2, 1936) was an architect prominent in Savannah, Georgia. He worked as a draftsman for Alfred Eichberg and eventually partnered with him. Life and career Witcover was born in Darlington, South Carolina, in 1871, to Wolf and Dora. At age 17, he moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he began work as a draftsman for noted architect Alfred Eichberg. Witcover served on the board of the Congregation Mickve Israel and on the first board of Savannah's public library. He served in the Georgia Hussars as a private, and was also in the Freemasonry fraternity. Witcover married Agnes Dillon. Death Witcover died on October 2, 1936, in his hometown of Darlington, where he had returned to live with two of his sons. He was 65. He is interred in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Maryland, alongside his wife, who predeceased him by four years. Sholl & Fay was the architectural firm of Charles Sholl and Calvin Fay which was active in the 19th century. The partnership existed between 1852 and 1857.
