11th Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry
The 11th Kansas Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 11th Kansas Infantry was organized at Camp Lyon near Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from August 29 through September 14, 1862. It mustered in on April 3, 1862, for three years under the command of Colonel Thomas Ewing Jr. The regiment moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, October 4–9, 1862, then to Pea Ridge, Arkansas, October 15–19. Kansas In The Civil War
At the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861, Kansas was the newest U.S. state, admitted just months earlier in January. The state had formally rejected slavery by popular vote and vowed to fight on the side of the Union, though ideological divisions with neighboring Missouri, a slave state, had led to violent conflict in previous years and persisted for the duration of the war. While Kansas was a rural frontier state distant from the major theaters of war and its Unionist government was never seriously threatened by Confederate military forces, several engagements did occur within its borders, as well as countless raids and skirmishes between local irregulars, including the Lawrence Massacre by pro-Confederate guerrillas under William Quantrill in August 1863. Edmund Ross
Edmund Gibson Ross (December 7, 1826May 8, 1907) was a politician who represented Kansas after the American Civil War and was later governor of the New Mexico Territory. His vote against convicting President Andrew Johnson of "high crimes and misdemeanors" allowed Johnson to stay in office by the margin of one vote. As the seventh of seven Republican U.S. Senators to break with his party, he proved to be the person whose decision would result in conviction or acquittal. When he chose the latter, the vote of 35–19 in favor of Johnson's conviction failed to reach the required two-thirds vote. Ross lost his bid for re-election two years later.
