11th Legislative Assembly Of Ontario
The 11th Legislative Assembly of Ontario was in session from January 25, 1905, until May 2, 1908, just prior to the 1908 general election. The majority party was the Ontario Conservative Party led by Sir James P. Whitney. The Commissioner of Crown Lands became the Minister of Lands, Forests and Mines. The Commissioner of Public Works became the Minister of Public Works. 1908 Ontario General Election
The 1908 Ontario general election was the 12th general election held in the Province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on June 8, 1908, to elect the 106 Members of the 12th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, Ontario Conservative Party, led by Sir James P. Whitney, was elected for a second term in government, increasing its majority in the Legislature significantly. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Alexander Grant MacKay, continued to lose seats. Allan Studholme became the province's first Labour Party of Canada, Labour MLA as the result of a 1906 Hamilton East (provincial electoral district), Hamilton East by-election. Albert Edward Donovan
Albert Edward Donovan (February 5, 1859 – December 6, 1925) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Brockville in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative member from 1907 to 1919. He was born in Portland Township, Leeds County, Ontario, the son of John Donovan. He was educated in Athens and taught school for several years. Donovan then entered the life insurance business, becoming an agent for the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in Great Britain and, after his return to Canada, represented the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York in Halifax and then Toronto. Robert Herbert McElroy
Robert Herbert McElroy (January 27, 1860 – January 20, 1920) was an Ontario merchant and political figure. He represented Carleton in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative member from 1907 to 1919. He was born in Richmond, Canada West, the son of Henry McElroy, and educated in Richmond and at the Ottawa Collegiate Institute. In 1887, he married Helen E. Baird. McElroy owned a general store, operated a flour mill and was a grain dealer. He served as reeve for Richmond from 1897 to 1903. McElroy was elected to the provincial assembly in a 1907 by-election held after the death of George Nelson Kidd. He also served as a director for the Central Canada Exhibition. George Nelson Kidd
George Nelson Kidd (October 1, 1864 – February 9, 1907) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Carleton in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1907 as a Conservative- Patrons of Industry, then Independent Conservative and finally as a Conservative member. He was born in Carp, Canada West, the son of Richard Kidd, an Irish immigrant, and educated at Carp and in Kingston. Kidd served as reeve of Huntley Township from 1889 to 1894. He was also president for the Huntley Agricultural Fair. Kidd married Esther Alvira Young. His cousin Edward Kidd represented Carleton in the House of Commons of Canada during the same time period. Carleton (Ontario Provincial Electoral District)
Carleton is a provincial riding in Ontario, Canada. It was created in 1867 at the time of confederation and lasted until provincial redistribution in 1996. In the 1999 provincial election it was redistributed into Nepean—Carleton and Lanark—Carleton. In 2007 it was abolished into Carleton—Mississippi Mills and Lanark—Frontenac—Lennox and Addington. In 2018 it was re-created as the riding of Carleton from parts of Nepean—Carleton, Carleton—Mississippi Mills and Ottawa South. Alexander Ferguson
Alexander Ferguson (February 23, 1860 – March 3, 1925) was a farmer and politician in Ontario, Canada. He represented Cardwell from 1906 to 1908 and Simcoe South from 1908 to 1919 in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative member. He was educated in Collingwood. Edward Alfred Little (April 9, 1859 – February 23, 1934) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Cardwell in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1898 as a Conservative- Protestant Protective Association member and from 1898 to 1906 as a Conservative member. Robert Edwin Clapp
Robert Edwin Clapp (February 12, 1855 – 1944) was an Ontario physician and political figure. He represented Bruce South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1905 to 1908 as a Conservative member. Charles Martin Bowman
Charles Martin Bowman (May 7, 1863 – October 24, 1932) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario who represented the ridings of Bruce North from 1898 to 1914 and Bruce West from 1914 to 1919. Background Bowman was born in St. Jacobs, Canada West, the son of Isaac Erb Bowman, and educated there and in Berlin (later Kitchener, Ontario). He entered his father's tanning business and set up a tannery in Southampton in 1882. After a fire destroyed that business, he purchased a tannery at Port Elgin. He went on to operate a furniture business in Southampton. With James Conmee, Bowman was awarded a contract for construction on the Algoma Central Railway. In 1902 he and James Whalen, son-in-law of Liberal M.P. James Conmee, formed the Great Lakes Dredging Company, obtaining large contracts to dredge the Fort William and Port Arthur harbors.
