112th Ohio General Assembly
The One Hundred Twelfth Ohio General Assembly was the legislative body of the state of Ohio in 1977 and 1978. In this General Assembly, the Ohio Senate and Ohio House of Representatives were controlled by the Democratic Party. In the Senate, there were 21 Democrats and 12 Republicans. In the House, there were 66 Democrats and 33 Republicans. It used redistricted legislative districts based on the 1970 Census. Democrats controlled the Ohio House of Representatives from January 1, 1973, through December 31, 1994, under Ohio's longest serving House Speaker, Vernal G. Riffe, (D., Scioto County). Ohio Senate
The Ohio Senate is the upper house of the Ohio General Assembly. The State Senate, which meets in the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, first convened in 1803. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president of the Ohio Senate presides over the body when in session, and is currently Matt Huffman. Currently, the Senate consists of 25 Republicans and eight Democrats, with the Republicans controlling three more seats than the 22 required for a supermajority vote. Senators are limited to two consecutive terms. Marcus Aurelius Roberto (November 26, 1930 – February 24, 1986), a Democrat, was a member of the Ohio General Assembly. Roberto initially won a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1970, replacing Anice Johnson, and won reelection in 1972 and 1974. However, Roberto sought to move up to the Ohio Senate in 1976. Robert O'Shaughnessy
Robert Emmet O'Shaughnessy, Sr. (February 23, 1918 – February 16, 1991) was an American Democratic politician, member of the Ohio Senate, and Funeral Director. A member of a political family, O'Shaughnessy was initially appointed to the Senate to succeed his brother, Jerry O'Shaughnessy, who had died. In 1974, O'Shaughnessy overcame a divisive primary and a challenge by Republican Keith McNamara to retain the seat. He subsequently was appointed as Chairman of the Senate Energy Committee. In 1978, O'Shaughnessy faced opposition in John Kasich, a political newcomer. In the end, he lost his seat to Kasich, ending his tenure in the Senate at seven years. After his defeat, he opted to become Clerk of the Senate, however was not chosen. Bill Mussey
William Howard Mussey (August 24, 1913 – May 12, 2000) was a Republican politician who formerly served in the Ohio General Assembly. A native of Batavia, Ohio and a former reporter, Mussey initially won election to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, following redistricting because of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was reelected in 1968, and 1970. In 1972, Mussey opted to move to the Ohio Senate, following another redistricting process that left incumbent Senator Oakley Collins out of the district. He went on to win the seat, and was sworn in on January 3, 1973. He won reelection to the seat in 1976. By 1979, Mussey had been chosen by Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes to serve on the Ohio Industrial Commission, and resigned on March 30, after serving as a legislator for over twelve years.
