10th Dumbartonshire Rifle Volunteers F.C.
The 10th Dumbartonshire Rifle Volunteers Football Club, known as Kirkintilloch Athletic Football Club from 1879 until the club was wound up in 1882, was a 19th-century association football club based in Kirkintilloch in Dumbartonshire. History The club was formed out of the 10th Dumbartonshire Rifle Volunteers, a company in the Volunteer movement of the British Army. The Volunteers included sporting activities within their purview and newspapers often carried reports of such activities. The growth of football in Scotland, especially thanks to Queen's Park F.C., and the success of army teams in England such as the Royal Engineers A.F.C., encouraged regiments to form football clubs as part of the physical regimen. 10th D.R.V. 1879–80 Scottish Cup
The 1879–80 Scottish Cup – officially the Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup – was the seventh season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. With 142 entrants, this season saw the largest number of teams to compete for the trophy since its inception. Three-time defending champions Vale of Leven lost their first match in the competition for four seasons when they were knocked out in the first round, losing 4–3 to rivals Dumbarton. Queen's Park regained the trophy as they won the competition for the fourth time after beating Thornliebank 3–0 in the final on 21 February 1880. Kirkintilloch (; sco, Kirkintulloch; gd, Cair Cheann Tulaich) is a town and former barony burgh in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It lies on the Forth and Clyde Canal and on the south side of Strathkelvin, about northeast of central Glasgow. Historically part of Dunbartonshire, the town is the administrative home of East Dunbartonshire council area, its population in 2009 was estimated at 19,700 and its population in 2011 was 19,689. Toponymy "Kirkintilloch" comes from the Gaelic ''Cair Cheann Tulaich'' or ''Cathair Cheann Tulaich'', meaning "fort at the end of the hill". This, in turn, may come from a Cumbric name, ''Caer-pen-taloch'', which has the same meaning. A possible reference to the site is made in the 9th century Welsh text Historia Brittonum, in which the Antonine Wall is said to end at 'Caerpentaloch'.
