Radio broadcasting is transmission of audio (sound), sometimes with related metadata, by radio waves to radio receivers belonging to a public audience. CHLY 101.7 FM is a campus radio station based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Primarily funded by students of Vancouver Island University's Nanaimo campus, the station is also supported by donations and memberships from the community, as well as sponsorship and advertising from local businesses. CHLY-FM is run by the Radio Malaspina Society, an incorporated non-profit society with a mission to broadcast an FM radio signal of 3,000 watts its broadcast community. Native Communications Inc. (NCI) is a public radio network in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The network provides programming by and for Canadian First Nations was founded by Donald A. McIvor of Wabowden, Manitoba. The network mainly plays country music in order to appeal to a more general audience, while still serving the First Nations with its other programming. CHIM is a Canadian radio station, which previously broadcast Christian music at 102.3 FM in Timmins, Ontario. The station also currently broadcasts at 1710 AM. The station began testing its signal at 102.3 MHz on December 24, 1995, and officially signed on April 7, 1996. CKHQ-FM (''Kanehsatake United Voices Radio'') is a First Nations community radio station that operates at 101.7 FM in Kanesatake, Quebec, Canada. Previously owned by the Kanehsatake Communications Society and serving the Mohawk community, the station received CRTC approval in 1988. Following the death of a former station manager in the early-2000s, the station went dark and was abandoned. The station's license lapsed in 2004, after a one-year renewal period, but was never renewed. Sometime in 2013, the station resumed broadcasting, but as a pirate radio station on a part-time basis, without a current license. CKER-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 101.7 FM in Edmonton, Alberta. The station airs a multilingual programming format branded as ''Connect FM 101.7'' and is owned by Akash Broadcasting Inc. History CKER-FM first hit the airwaves on November 1, 1980 on the AM dial as Edmonton's first and only multilingual station. It was owned by O.K.
