Anton Rubinstein
Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein (; ) was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein, who founded the Moscow Conservatory. As a pianist, Rubinstein ranks among the great 19th-century keyboard virtuosos. He became most famous for his series of historical recitals, seven enormous, consecutive concerts covering the history of piano music. Rubinstein played this series throughout Russia and Eastern Europe and in the United States when he toured there. Although best remembered as a pianist and educator (most notably as the composition teacher of Tchaikovsky), Rubinstein was also a prolific composer; he wrote 20 operas, the best known of which is '' The Demon''. Antón de Alaminos (c. 1482 - ?) was a Spanish navigator and explorer in the New World. He was considered the most experienced and knowledgeable marine pilot serving in the Spanish Main during the first quarter of the sixteenth century. Anton Agius (1933–2008) was a Malta, Maltese Sculpture, sculptor, best known for creating a large number of monuments around Malta. He was dubbed "the national sculptor" by former Maltese president Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. Early life Agius was born in Rabat, Malta, Rabat on 1 December 1933, to parents Ġużeppi and Stella (née Galea). His first artistic interest was in music, however he didn't focus on this area after concerns from his mother. Education Agius first attended state school in Rabat. His first instruction in art was under sculptor Samuel Bugeja, Aguis' cousin, who tutored him in drawing. Agius was then an apprentice under sculptor Guzeppi Galea during his teens. Agius continued his education at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufacturers, and Commerce between 1950 and 1953 where he studied under Ignazio Cefai. Anton Quintana (6 September 1937 – 15 October 2017), pseudonym of Anton Adolf Kuyten, was a Dutch writer. Biography Early life Quintana was born in 1937 as the twin brother of André Kuyten. His brother was named by his mother and Quintana was named by his father after Anton Mussert and Adolf Hitler. His father abandoned his wife and children when Quintana was two years old to join the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands, Dutch national socialist party. Their mother died of tuberculosis when they were ten years old. The twins then moved to an orphanage in Amsterdam. Due to complications at birth, one side of Quintana's face was left disfigured which was only corrected when he was sixteen years of age. Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (sometimes Anton Cajetan Adelgasser; 1 October 1729 – 23 December 1777) was a German organist and composer at Salzburg Cathedral. He composed a good deal of liturgical music that included eight masses and two requiems, as well as oratorios and orchestral and keyboard works. Born in Inzell, Bavaria, he moved to Salzburg where he studied under Johann Ernst Eberlin. In 1750 he became the organist at the Salzburg Cathedral where he remained for the rest of his life. After a visit to Italy in 1764 – 1765, he set Metastasio's only opera ''La Nitteti''. It was performed in Salzburg in 1767. Also in 1767, he collaborated with Mozart and Michael Haydn on the oratorio ''Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots''. Anton Ackermann (born Eugen Hanisch, 25 November 1905 – 4 May 1973) was an East German politician. In 1953, he briefly served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Life and career He was born into the family of a weaver and worked as an unskilled labourer from a young age while pursuing his elementary studies. At the same time, he began his political career in the Free Socialist Youth (FSJ) of the Social Democratic Party. From 1920 to 1928, he worked as functionary of the Communist Youth League of Germany. In 1926 he joined the Communist Party of Germany. He studied at the Lenin School in Moscow. Back in Germany, the Communist Party was expelled after the Nazis gained power in 1933.
