Žarnovica District
Žarnovica District () is a district in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia. Until 1918, the district was mostly part of the county of Kingdom of Hungary of Tekov, only a part of Hodruša-Hámre, namely Banská Hodruša in the east was part of Banská Štiavnica, an urban county on the territory of Hont County. Districts Of Slovakia
The districts of Slovakia are administrative units known as in the Slovak language. It is a second-tier territorial administrative unit, below a Region () in standing, and superior to a municipality (). Each district contains at least several municipalities. The cities of Bratislava and Košice are the only cities in Slovakia divided into internal urban districts, with five in Bratislava, and four in Košice. These urban districts are then further divided into smaller boroughs (which serve a function analogous to municipalities in typical districts). All other districts are larger in size and also include rural areas, and rural as well as urban municipalities. Each of these more typical districts has an urban centre serving as the seat of the district, usually the largest town (or the only town) of a given district. Brehy, Žarnovica District
Brehy (, , , ; , until 1890: ) is a village and municipality in the Žarnovica District, Banská Bystrica Region in Slovakia. History In historical records, the village was first mentioned in 1283 when German colonists arrived here for overworking local mines of silver (from I. Lasslob "Deutsche Ortsnamen in der Slowakei") In 1339 the King gave the village to the Sz. Elizabeth Hospital in Nová Baňa, in 1601 it passed to the noble Dóczy family. Tekovská Breznica
Tekovská Breznica (, ) is a municipality in the Žarnovica District, Banská Bystrica Region in Slovakia. Location The village is 5 km south of Nová Baňa and about 15 km south of Žarnovica. History It was first mentioned in 1276 when the Benedictine Abbey of Hronský Beňadik protested against the Archbishopric of Esztergom occupying the property of the Abbey in the Breznica border. The castle was built by the archbishop of Esztergom in the late 13th century. Matthew III Csák took it by digging a tunnel under the castle walls. After the death of Matthew Csák in 1321, it was again the property of the archbishop. It was recruited in the 15th century. After the unsuccessful conspiracy of the archbishop János Vitéz against King Matthias Corvinus in 1472 it was taken by the king. Ostrý Grúň () is a village and municipality in the Žarnovica District, Banská Bystrica Region in Slovakia. History The village was massacred and burned down in January 1945 by the Nazi anti-partisan unit Edelweiss, after the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising. Geography The municipality lies at an altitude of 450 metres, covering an area of 16.71 km². It is part of the Vtáčnik mountain range, within the Slovak Central Mountains. Demographics The municipality has a population of 543, as of December 2019. In 2011, 86% of the population identified as Slovak. The religious makeup was 75.6% Roman Catholic and 4.2% unaffiliated. Nová Baňa
Nová Baňa (; ) is a town in the west of central Slovakia and the largest town of the Žarnovica District, located in the Banská Bystrica Region. Etymology The original name of Nová Baňa was Štiavnica - derived from the still existing spring water ( - "acid water"). The town was first mentioned as ''nova montanya Schewnyche'' (1337). The Slovak name was adopted also by German colonists (Schennych, Sewniche). Contemporary description ''noua montanya regis'' (new royal mine) became the basis of newer Slovak (''Nová Baňa''), German (''Königsberg'') and Hungarian name (''Újbánya''). Kľak
Kľak () is a village and municipality in the Žarnovica District, Banská Bystrica Region in Slovakia. History On January 21, 1945 the village was burned by Waffen-SS anti-partisan unit Edelweiss (anti-partisan unit), Edelweiss with help of Heimatschutz unit. There were 84 inhabitants of the village killed (including 36 children), and all of 132 houses and buildings were destroyed. Numerous victims were burned alive in their own houses. Nazi soldiers raided the village and expelled the rest of the inhabitants from the village, they also shot all of the cattle. Considering the method of accomplishment, not the number of casualties, this was one of the most brutal war crimes committed on the Slovakia, Slovak territory during World War II.
