Its seat is the town of Śmigiel, which lies approximately south-west of Kościan and south-west of the regional capital Poznań. The gmina covers an area of , and as of 2006 its total population is 17,465 (out of which the population of Śmigiel amounts to 5,452, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 12,013).
