Štěpán Rak
Štěpán Rak (born 8 August 1945) is a Rusyns, Rusyn, Ukraine-born Czech Republic, Czech classical guitarist and composer. He is well known for the Extended technique, technical innovations that he uses in his compositions. Biography Rak first studied at a Fine Arts School in Prague and continued with guitar studies at the Prague Conservatory, 1965–70. During 1975 he also studied composition at the Prague Academy of Arts. In 1973, his orchestral composition ''Hiroshima'' won a second prize at a Czechoslovakian competition for young composers. From 1975 to 1980 he taught guitar at the Jyväskylä Conservatory in Finland. A composer is a person who writes music. The term is especially used to indicate composers of Western classical music, or those who are composers by occupation. Many composers are, or were, also skilled performers of music. Etymology and Definition The term is descended from Latin, ''compōnō''; literally "one who puts together". The earliest use of the term in a musical context given by the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' is from Thomas Morley's 1597 ''A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music'', where he says "Some wil be good descanters ..and yet wil be but bad composers". 'Composer' is a loose term that generally refers to any person who writes music. More specifically, it is often used to denote people who are composers by occupation, or those who in the tradition of Western classical music. Jyväskylä () is a city and municipality in Finland in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland.
