Škocjan () is a settlement in the Municipality of Grosuplje in central Slovenia. It lies in the hills south of Grosuplje, near Turjak. The area is part of the historical region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Central Slovenia Statistical Region. Name The name of the settlement was changed from ''Staro Apno'' to ''Škocjan'' (literally, 'Saint Cantius') in 1992. Although many former religious names of settlements in Slovenian were restored after the fall of communism, this is one of the few cases of a settlement receiving a religious name after 1990 even though it did not have a religious name before the Second World War. Rak Škocjan
Rak Škocjan ( sl, Rakov Škocjan; ) is a valley and a landscape park, part of Inner Carniola Regional Park in southwestern Slovenia. Administratively, it belongs to the settlement of Rakov Škocjan. Rak Škocjan has been protected since 1949 and is the oldest landscape park in Slovenia. Geography There are two natural bridges in Rak Škocjan, Little Natural Bridge ( sl, Mali naravni most) and about downstream, to the west, Big Natural Bridge ( sl, Veliki naravni most). Rak Creek traverses the valley and enters the cave Weaver's Cave at its western side. It reappears again in Planina Cave. Above the valley, in the vicinity of Big Natural Bridge, stand the ruins of St. Cantianus's Church, built in the early 17th century in the late Gothic style. Škocjan Caves Regional Park is located in the Škocjan Karst, a vast flat landscape that lies at an elevation between 420 and 450 m in the southeast part of the Karst area. Following its independence, the Slovenia committed itself to protecting the Škocjan Caves area; for this reason, it established Škocjan Caves Regional Park and its managing authority, the Škocjan Caves Park Public Service Agency.
