ÄŒSD Class T478.3
T478.3 is a class of locomotives built for Czechoslovak State Railways to replace the most powerful steam locomotives (such as ÄŒSD Class 477.0, 477.0, ÄŒSD Class 475.1, 475.1 or ÄŒSD Class 498.1, 498.1) in heavy passenger and freight service. Their design is based on the type ÄŒSD Class T 478.1, T478.1; the main difference is the new, more powerful V12 diesel engine. History In the 1960s, the number of powerful diesel locomotives for mainline service in the former Czechoslovakia was still insufficient. The ÄŒSD Class T 478.1, T478.1 class performed well, but they were less powerful than the heaviest passenger steam locomotives. The new type of locomotive was to be equipped with a V12 diesel engine of a newly developed class with 230 mm bore. The new engine was able to run at higher RPM and thus develop more power at the output of the traction generator at high locomotive speeds than the older designs. The engines were expected to be produced in Straight-six engine, I6, Strai ...

ÄŒKD
ČKD (Českomoravská Kolben-Daněk) () was one of the largest engineering companies in the former Czechoslovakia and today's Czech Republic. It is famous for the Tatra T3, a tramcar that sold 13,991 units worldwide. History ČKD was formed in 1927 from the merger of two smaller companies, Českomoravská-Kolben (founded 1896, produced machinery for hydro dams) and Breitfeld-Daněk (founded 1854, produced machinery for mines and food industry). From 1927 until 1929 ČKD's products included a motorcycle designed by Jaroslav František Koch. It was an advanced four-stroke single-cylinder unit construction double overhead camshaft design of 500cc. It was sold under the marque BD, thus perpetuating the Breitfeld-Daněk identity. In 1929 ČKD sold its motorcycle business to Praga Hostivař, which re-branded the motorcycles under the Praga marque. It was one of the main suppliers to the Czechoslovak state of military vehicles during the 1930s. During the German occupation of Cz ...
