''Özgür Gündem'' ( Turkish for "Free Agenda") was an Istanbul-based daily Turkish language newspaper, mainly read by Kurds. Launched in May 1992, the newspaper was known for its extensive reporting on the Kurdish-Turkish conflict, and was regularly accused of making propaganda for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Its editors and staff have frequently been arrested and prosecuted, which resulted in multiple publication bans. Since April 1994, the publication continued under different names until ''Özgür Gündem'' was relaunched in 2011. A month after the 2016 Turkish coup d'état attempt, the newspaper was "temporarily" shut down following a court order, and some twenty journalists and editors were taken into custody, including novelist and ''Özgür Gündem'' columnist Aslı Erdoğan, editor in-chief Zana Kaya, and newsroom editor İnan Kızılkaya, facing charges of "membership of a terrorist organisation" and "undermining national unity." Özgür Çek (born 3 January 1991) is a Turkish professional footballer who plays as a left winger for TFF First League club Gençlerbirliği. Early years Özgür Çek began his footballing at a Fenerbahçe school in Istanbul. In 2002, he moved to local club Maltepespor due to its proximity to his residence. He was transferred to Pendikspor in 2004, with club scouts having been impressed with his talent. Özgür Çek was persuaded by the club's training facilities and former players who had gone through the youth system at Pendikspor. His dream was to eventually move to one of Istanbul's "big three" clubs: Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. Özgür Çevik (born 27 May 1981) is a Turkish actor and singer who gained fame and intense fan following as a result of having appeared in his country's version of the television pop music talent contest, ''Star Academy'' and, subsequently, as a variety performer and actor. A native of Ankara, his father (Zeki) was a soldier and his mother (Nihal) was a police officer. He has one younger sister (Özge). Because of his father's job, Çevik's family moved a lot. Özgür Gürbulak (born 30 April 1981) is a Turkish wheelchair basketball player and Paralympian. He is a 4 point player competing for Galatasaray Wheelchair Basketball, and is part of Turkey men's national wheelchair basketball team. Özgür played in the national team, which qualified to the 2012 Summer Olympics. Özgür Dengiz (born 1984) is a Turkish serial killer and cannibal. Captured on September 14, 2007 in Ankara, he admitted killing two men, attempting to murder another man and cannibalising one of his victims. He is nicknamed the "Cannibal of Ankara". Early years Özgür Dengiz was born to Satılmış, a non-commissioned officer and veteran of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and Sultan, a seamstress. He fought with his parents constantly, and often ran away from home. He did not continue his education after finishing middle school. When he was 17, he killed one of his friends during an argument, and was sentenced to a reduced 10-year sentence in prison due to his young age. His father was the one who turned him in to police. He served three years of the sentence before being pardoned by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. He then joined the army at his father's insistence. Özker Özgür was a leading Turkish-Cypriot politician. Özgür, whose last name means "free" was born in 1940 in the village of Vretça, Paphos District, Cyprus. During 1961–1975 he worked as a secondary school English teacher on the island. With the votes of the teachers, he was elected to the founding parliament of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus in 1975. Between 1976 and 1996 he served as the leader of the Republican Turkish Party CTP in Cyprus. In the early general elections of 1993 he was elected to the Parliament and served as the Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for North Cyprus.
