ÖBB Class 2143
The ÖBB Class 2143 is a class of diesel-hydraulic locomotives operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in Austria. Technical specifications The locomotives have a B-B wheel arrangement, and are powered by SGP T12c diesel motors. They are equipped with a Voith hydraulic transmission. History The locomotives were introduced in 1965. A total of 77 locomotives, numbered 2143.001 to 2143.077, have been built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker. Locomotive 2143.21 is operated by the ''Stauden-Verkehrsgesellschaft'' (SVG). This locomotive was formerly also operated by the Wiener Lokalbahnen The Wiener Lokalbahnen (WLB) is a transportation company in Greater Vienna, Austria. It is one of the two transportation subsidiaries of the city-owned Wiener Stadtwerke holding, the other one being Wiener Linien. The WLB operate the Badner .... Simmering-Graz-Pauker
Simmering-Graz-Pauker AG (SGP), founded as Simmering-Graz-Pauker AG für Maschinen-, Kessel- und Waggonbau, was an important Austrian machine and engine factory, manufacturing: machinery, boilers and rail vehicles. It was established in 1941 through the merger of Simmering machinery and rolling stock company with the Graz machine and rolling stock company and the Paukerwerkstraße Corporation from Vienna. History After World War II the company was majority owned by the state and had a wide network of international offices and subsidiaries in Asia, South America and Europe with several thousand employees. The company experienced rapid growth until the mid-1980s. SGP ceased to exist as an independent company in 1989 as part of the restructuring of the state-owned Österreichische Industrieholding (ÖIAG), when the former was renamed as ''SGP Verkehrstechnik GmbH''. In 1992, the Republic of Austria sold 26% of its shares in SGP to Siemens, and in 1993 another 48% of SGP's shares ...

AAR Wheel Arrangement
The AAR wheel arrangement system is a method of classifying locomotive (or unit) wheel arrangements that was developed by the Association of American Railroads. Essentially a simplification of the European UIC classification, it is widely used in North America to describe Diesel locomotive, diesel and electric locomotives (including third-rail electric locomotives). It is not used for steam locomotives, which use the Whyte notation instead. The AAR system counts axles instead of wheels. Letters refer to powered axles, and numbers to unpowered (or idler) axles. "A" refers to one powered axle, "B" to two powered axles in a row, "C" to three powered axles in a row, and "D" to four powered axles in a row. "1" refers to one idler axle, and "2" to two idler axles in a row. A dash ("–") separates Bogie, trucks or wheel assemblies. A plus sign ("+") refers to articulation, either by connecting bogies with span bolsters or by connecting individual locomotives via solid drawbars instead of ...

Diesel-hydraulic
A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine. Several types of diesel locomotives have been developed, differing mainly in the means by which mechanical power is conveyed to the driving wheels. Early internal combustion locomotives and railcars used kerosene and gasoline as their fuel. Rudolf Diesel patented his first compression-ignition engine in 1898, and steady improvements to the design of diesel engines reduced their physical size and improved their power-to-weight ratios to a point where one could be mounted in a locomotive. Internal combustion engines only operate efficiently within a limited power band, and while low power gasoline engines could be coupled to mechanical transmissions, the more powerful diesel engines required the development of new forms of transmission. This is because clutches would need to be very large at these power levels and would not fit in a standard -wide locomotive frame, or wear too quick ...

Voith
The Voith Group is a German manufacturer of machines for the pulp and paper industry, technical equipment for hydropower plants and drive and braking systems. The family-owned company, which operates worldwide and has its headquarters in Heidenheim an der Brenz, was founded in 1867. Company history Laying the foundations for industrial paper production In 1825, Johann Matthäus Voith took over his father's locksmith's workshop in Heidenheim with five employees, mainly carrying out repairs to water wheels and paper mills. Around 1830 in Heidenheim, there were about 600 people working in 15 factories, mostly textile factories that had been established by wealthy merchants and publishers. The necessary maintenance and repair of the expensive machinery offered a source of income to several workshops, particularly the locksmiths and metalworkers in what was still a small town at the time. In 1830, Johann Matthäus Voith and his workshop were involved in the construction of a pap ...
