Óscar “El Gallo Copeton” Martínez (born January 3, 1934, in Corpus Christi, Texas) is an American musician and songwriter of Mexican descent who performs Tejano, slow rock, polkas, cumbias and English tunes. The song is best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a Top 40 hit in the U.S. charts.
