ÍR Women's Basketball
The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur women's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the women's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland. History ÍR women's team was founded in 1950 and was one of the pioneers of women's basketball in Iceland as one of the founding members of the women's Icelandic women's championship tournament. It is also one of the most successful women's team in the country, winning a total of 11 national championships. After not fielding a team since being relegated from the Úrvalsdeild in 2004, the team was revived in 2017 and registered into Division I for the 2017-2018 season. On June 16, 2017, the club hired former player Ólafur Jónas Sigurðsson as the head coach of the team. In June 2021, the team hired Kristjana Eir Jónsdóttir, the former assistant coach of ÍR men's team, as its head coach. Kristrún Sigurjónsdóttir
Kristrún Sigurjónsdóttir (born 14 March 1985) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. During her career, she won the Icelandic championship three times as a member of Haukar. Playing career Kristrún's first senior games where for the joint team of ÍR/ Breiðablik in the second-tier league. After helping ÍR win the league and gain promotion in 2003, she debuted in the top-tier league during the 2003–2004 season where she averaged 10.5 points in 18 games. After ÍR's relegation that season, she transferred to Haukar where she won back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. She was one of the league's best players during the 2008–2009 season, averaging a career high 19.4 points during the regular season. Helgi Jóhannsson
Helgi Jóhannsson (23 June 1929 – 4 April 2003) was an Icelandic basketball coach and player. He was one of the main pioneers of modern basketball in Iceland and was a founding member of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur's basketball department. As a coach, Helgi won a record 8 men's national championships from 1954 to 1964. He played with ÍR in the 1964–65 FIBA European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague), the first time an Icelandic team competed in a continental competition. He was the head coach of the Icelandic men's national basketball team on three occasions, from 1961–1967, in 1970 and in 1978. Kristinn Jörundsson
Kristinn Jörundsson (born 13 October 1950) is an Icelandic former basketball and football player who played for both the Icelandic national basketball team and the Icelandic national football team. He won seven national basketball championships as a member of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur and one national football championships as a member of Knattspyrnufélagið Fram. Basketball career Club Kristinn played 19 seasons with ÍR, winning the national championship seven times. He was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year in 1973, 1975 and 1977 and the Player of the Year in 1975 and 1977. International Kristinn played 79 games for the Icelandic national basketball team from 1970 to 1981. Hrefna Ingimarsdóttir (30 August 1931 – 26 September 2005) was an Icelandic athletic coach, trainer and educator. She was a pioneer in women's basketball in Iceland in the 1950s and the first coach of the ÍR women's basketball team which she led to three national championships. Linda Stefánsdóttir
Linda Stefánsdóttir (born 28 June 1972) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. She played 14 seasons in the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, winning the Icelandic championship and the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 1999 and 2002. In 2001 she was named one of the twelve players of the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century by the Icelandic Basketball Federation. Hildur Sigurðardóttir (born 15 October 1981) is an Icelandic basketball coach and player. She is the former head coach of Úrvalsdeild kvenna club Breiðablik and an assistant coach to the Icelandic women's national basketball team. As a player she won the Icelandic championship five times and the Icelandic Basketball Cup three times.
