Études (Chopin)
The Études by Frédéric Chopin are three sets of études (solo studies) for the piano published during the 1830s. There are twenty-seven compositions overall, comprising two separate collections of twelve, numbered Op. 10 and Op. 25, and a set of three without opus number. History Composition Chopin's Études formed the foundation for what was then a revolutionary playing style for the piano. They are some of the most challenging and evocative pieces of all the works in concert piano repertoire. Because of this, the music remains popular and often performed in both concert and private stages. Some are so popular they have been given nicknames; among the most popular are Op. 10, No. 3, sometimes identified by the names ''Tristesse'' ("Sadness") or "Farewell" (''L'Adieu''), as well as the "Revolutionary Étude" ( Op. 10, No. 12), “Black Keys” ( Op. 10, No. 5), and "Winter Wind" ( Op. 25, No. 11). No nicknames are of Chopin's ...

Étude
An étude (; ) or study is an instrumental musical composition, usually short, designed to provide practice material for perfecting a particular musical skill. The tradition of writing études emerged in the early 19th century with the rapidly growing popularity of the piano. Of the vast number of études from that era some are still used as teaching material (particularly pieces by Carl Czerny and Muzio Clementi), and a few, by major composers such as Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt and Claude Debussy, achieved a place in today's concert repertory. Études written in the 20th century include those related to traditional ones (György Ligeti) and those that require wholly unorthodox technique (John Cage). 19th century Studies, lessons, and other didactic instrumental pieces composed before the 19th century are extremely varied, without any established genres. Domenico Scarlatti's ''30 Essercizi per gravicembalo'' ("30 Exercises for harpsichord", 1738) do not differ in scope fro ...

Transcendental Études
The ''Transcendental Études'' (french: Études d'exécution transcendante, links=no), S.139, are a set of twelve compositions for piano by Franz Liszt. They were published in 1852 as a revision of an 1837 set (which had not borne the title "d'exécution transcendante"), which in turn were – for the most part – an elaboration of a set of studies written in 1826. History The genesis of the ''Transcendental Études'' goes back to 1826, when 15-year-old Liszt wrote a set of youthful exercises called the ''Étude en douze exercices'' (Study in twelve exercises), S.136. These pieces were not particularly technically demanding. Liszt then returned to these pieces for thematic ideas, elaborating on them considerably, in the composition of the ''Douze Grandes Études'' (Twelve Grand Studies), S.137, which were published in 1837. The ''Transcendental Études'', S.139, are revisions of the ''Douze Grandes Études''. This third and final version was published in 1852 and dedicate ...

Études (Ligeti)
The Hungarian composer György Ligeti composed a cycle of 18 études for solo piano between 1985 and 2001. They are considered one of the major creative achievements of his last decades, and one of the most significant sets of piano studies of the 20th century, combining virtuoso technical problems with expressive content, following in the line of the études of Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, and Alexander Scriabin but addressing new technical ideas as a compendium of the concepts Ligeti had worked out in his other works since the 1950s. Pianist Jeremy Denk wrote that they "are a crowning achievement of his career and of the piano literature; though still new, they are already classics." Scope of the work There are 18 études arranged in three books or ''Livres'': six Études in Book 1 (1985), eight in Book 2 (1988–1994), four in Book 3 (1995–2001). Ligeti's original intention had been to compose only twelve Études, in two books of six each, on the model o ...

Grandes études De Paganini
The ''Grandes études de Paganini'', S. 141, are a series of six études for the piano by Franz Liszt, revised in 1851 from an earlier version (published as ', S. 140, in 1838). It is almost exclusively in the final version that these pieces are played today. The pieces are all based on the compositions of Niccolò Paganini for violin, and are among the most technically demanding pieces in the piano literature (especially the original versions, before Liszt revised them, thinning the textures and removing some of the more outrageous technical difficulties). The pieces run the gamut of technical hurdles, and frequently require very large stretches by the performer of an eleventh (although all stretches greater than a tenth were removed from the revised versions). Études Études d'exécution transcendante d'après Paganini *Original version (1838), S. 140 – Dedicated to Madame Clara Schumann **Étude No. 1 in G minor (Preludio: Andante; Non troppo lento, cantabile) ("Tremolo") ...

Trois Nouvelles études
Frédéric Chopin wrote his ''Trois nouvelles études'' ("three new studies") for piano in 1839, as a contribution to "Méthode des méthodes de piano", a piano instruction book by Ignaz Moscheles and François-Joseph Fétis. They are often erroneously described as posthumous. These études are less technical than the composer's Op. 10 and 25 and retain Chopin's original formula for harmonic and structural balance. The Études # The first of the ''Trois nouvelles études'' is an intimate piece in F minor. It develops students' facility with 3-on-4 polyrhythms. # The melody of the second étude in A major sits atop a series of chords in the right hand with a simple bass in the left hand. It develops students' facility with 2-on-3 polyrhythms. # The third and last étude, in D major, is the most technically challenging in this collection. It develops independence of voices and articulation in the right hand, with the upper melodic line quite legato over a staccato alto accom ...

Études Celtiques
''Études Celtiques'' (EC) (, ''Celtic Studies'') is a French academic journal based in Paris. It started life under the name ''Revue Celtique'', which was founded in 1870 by Henri Gaidoz. Between 1870 and 1934, 52 volumes were published under the editorial supervision of Celtic scholars such as Henri Gaidoz, Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville and Joseph Loth. ''Revue Celtique'' was the first journal to be wholly devoted to Celtic studies, particularly Celtic linguistics and philology, and remains essential for scholars today, in part owing to the publication of many text editions which have not since been superseded. It published contributions by Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville, Joseph Loth, Georges Dottin, , Joseph Vendryes, Whitley Stokes, Kuno Meyer and many others. Following the death of its last editor Joseph Loth (1847–1934), Joseph Vendryes (1875–1960) continued the journal under the name of ''Études Celtiques'', which saw its first issue in 1936. Volume 45 was published i ...
