Édouard Mathé
Édouard Mathé (1886–1934) was a French silent film actor. He starred in some 51 films between 1914 and 1924. Mathe appeared ''Barabbas'' in 1920. He regularly appeared in films directed by Louis Feuillade, such as the 1915 ''Les Vampires'' serial, the 1916 ''Judex'' serial, ''Tih Minh'' in 1918 and ''Parisette'' in 1921. Les Vampires
''Les Vampires'' is a 1915–16 French silent crime serial film written and directed by Louis Feuillade. Set in Paris, it stars Édouard Mathé, Musidora and Marcel Lévesque. The main characters are a journalist and his friend who become involved in trying to uncover and stop a bizarre underground Apache gang, known as The Vampires (who are not the mythological beings their name suggests). The serial consists of ten episodes, which vary greatly in length. Being roughly 7 hours long, it is considered one of the longest films ever made. It was produced and distributed by Feuillade's company Gaumont. Due to its stylistic similarities with Feuillade's other crime serials ''Fantômas'' and ''Judex'', the three are often considered a trilogy. ''Tih Minh'' is a 1918 French film serial directed by Louis Feuillade. Plot ''Tih Minh'' tells the story of Jacques d'Athys who returns to his home in Nice after an expedition to Indochina. Tih Minh (Mary Harald), a young woman from Laos, accompanies him. Athys and his servant, Placide, soon become involved with an international band of jewel thieves-cum-spies that include among its members a mysterious noble person, a hypnotist and an evil doctor who renders their victims amnesiacs. Unknown to Athys, he has returned to France with a book that contains a coded message revealing the location of treasure and sensitive government intelligence. This makes him and Tih Minh the target of the spies who will stop at nothing to obtain the book. ''Judex'' is the title of a 1916 silent French film serial concerning the adventures of Judex, who is a pulp hero, similar to The Shadow, created by Louis Feuillade and Arthur Bernède. Plot The story is complex and is told in 12 chapters. The basic plot involves a corrupt banker named Favraux, who is the target of Judex's revenge. It is eventually revealed that Judex's real identity is Jacques de Trémeuse, a man trying to avenge his family ruined by Favraux. Complicating matters is Favraux's beautiful and innocent daughter Jacqueline, with whom the avenger has fallen in love. Louis Feuillade
Louis Feuillade (; 19 February 1873 Р25 February 1925) was a French filmmaker of the silent era. Between 1906 and 1924, he directed over 630 films. He is primarily known for the crime serials ''Fant̫mas'', ''Les Vampires'' and ''Judex'' made between 1913 and 1916. Early life and career Feuillade was born in Lunel (H̩rault) to Barth̩l̩my Feuillade, a modest wine merchant, and Marie Avesque. Just beyond adolescence, he showed a deep interest in literature and created numerous drama and vaudeville projects. His excessively academic poems were occasionally published in local newspapers, and he acquired a reputation for his articles devoted to bullfighting. At twelve, he was sent by his parents to a Catholic seminary in Carcassonne, which has been credited for his gothic stylization in his later career.
