Çöpler, İliç
Çöpler is a village in the İliç District of Erzincan Province in Turkey. The village is populated by Kurds of the Şikakî tribe and had a population of 289 in 2022. Mining In 1999, a gold-silver-copper ore deposit was explored near the village. The Çöpler mine started production of gold in 2010. Erzincan Province
Erzincan Province ( tr, ; ku, Parezgêha Erzînganê) is a province in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. In Turkey, its capital is also called Erzincan. The population was 236,034 in 2018. Shekak (tribe)
The Shekak (also Shakkak, Shikakan or Shekkāk; ; ) is a Kurdish tribe present in various regions, mainly in West Azerbaijan province, Iran. History The Shikaki tribe are first mentioned in a Yezidi mişûr (manuscript) from 1207 AD, where they're mentioned as one of the tribes affiliated to Pir Sini Darani, who is a Yezidi saint represented in the Yezidi religion as the Lord of the sea. In the Sharafnama, they are mentioned twice. First, in the chapter on the emirate of Bohtan, as being one of the four tribes living in Finik. Second, in the chapter on the Ayyubid emirate of Hasankeyf. Çöpler Mine
The Çöpler mine is one of the largest gold mines in Turkey and in the world, operated by the American Çalık_Holding#Mining, Alacer Gold Corporation. The mine is located in Erzincan Province. The mine has estimated reserves of 6 million oz of gold. Çöpler is an epithermal Porphyry copper deposit, porphyry copper-gold deposit which forms part of the Middle Eocene Çöpler–Kabataş magmatic complex in central-eastern Turkey which formed on the north-eastern margin of the Tauride-Anatolide microcontinent. The intrusive rocks at Çöpler were emplaced into Late Paleozoic-Mesozoic metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. Çöpler Mine Disaster
On 13 February 2024, at the Çöpler Gold Mine in Erzincan Province, eastern Turkey, a mass of heap leach material collapsed, trapping a group of nine miners as it slid toward a creek. Heap leaching is an industrial mining process used to extract precious metals, copper, uranium, and other compounds from ore using a series of chemical reactions that absorb specific minerals and re-separate them after their division from other earth materials.
