ÆðuvÃk (from ''Æða'' meaning "duck" and ''vÃk'' meaning "bay", da, Avevig) is a community located on the southernmost tip of Eysturoy island of the Faroe Islands. Founded in 1897, its postal code is FO 645. Its population is about 100, and it is located at N 62° 4' 11 W 6° 41' 24. The village is located in the RunavÃk municipality along with the Innan Glyvur, RunavÃk, Saltangará, RituvÃk, Skipanes, Søldarfjørður, ElduvÃk, Funningsfjørður, Glyvrar, Oyndarfjørður, Skáli, Skálafjørður, Lambi, and Lambareiði villages. RunavÃk Municipality ( fo, RunavÃkar kommuna) is a municipality of the Faroe Islands. The town of Saltangará is the administrative centre. Its area comprises parts of the island of Eysturoy. Saltangará
Saltangará ( da, SaltangerÃ¥) is a village in the Faroe Islands, on the island of Eysturoy. Saltangará was founded in 1846 and is situated on the eastern side of Eysturoys Skalafjordur-inlet between RituvÃk and Søldarfjørður. The name is derived from three words: ''angar'' comes from the Old Norse ''angr'' which means a fjord or bay; ''á'' means a stream; and ''salt'' has the same meaning in Faroese, Icelandic and English. Eysturoy
Eysturoy (pronounced estroimeaning 'East Island') is a region and the second-largest of the Faroe Islands, both in size and population. Description Eysturoy is separated by a narrow sound from the main island of Streymoy. Eysturoy is extremely rugged, with some 66 separate mountain peaks, including Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the archipelago at . The country's two longest fjords, Skálafjørður in the south and Funningsfjørður in the north, almost split the island in two halves. The isthmus in between, Millum Fjarða, is one of the flattest areas in the country. Important settlements on Eysturoy are Fuglafjørður in the north and the densely populated area of the municipalities of RunavÃk and Nes in the south. Lamba (Faroe Islands)
Lamba (, da, Lamhauge), is a small village in the bottom of the inlet of LambavÃk on the east coast of Eysturoy, Faroe Islands. There are similarly named places, Lamba in Shetland and Lambay in Ireland. Settlement The houses in Lamba are spread down through the valley following the road on its way from the bottom of the valley down to the small harbour. There is a huge rock in the harbour. Nobody wants to remove it because it is said to be inhabited by ‘huldufólk’, a race of elfs or faries that people used to believe in. They are said to be fierce if disturbed. Skálafjørður
Skálafjørður ( da, SkÃ¥lefjord) is a fjord in Eysturoy and the longest in the Faroe Islands. Name Skála is a town situated on the western shore of the fjord. Its name (''Skáli'', genitive case ''skála'') means 'hall', 'assembly hall' or 'isolated hut' in Faroese. The southern part of the fjord near RunavÃk is historically also known as Kongshavn (''King's Harbour'') in Danish, referring to the excellent shelter in the natural harbour. Geography The Skálafjørður is the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands. It measures (Equidistant line) from the village of Skálafjørður to where it fuses with the Tangafjørður, between Raktangi (near Strendur) and Toftir. The deepest points are two different spots at circa depth near the villages of RunavÃk and Søldarfjørður respectively. Oyndarfjørður
Oyndarfjørður ( da, Andefjord) is a village on the northeastern coast of the Faroese island of Eysturoy in the RunavÃkar municipality. The 2020 population was 143. Its postal code is FO 690. The town's church dates from 1838. It is famous for two rinkusteinar, or rocking stones, located in the sea nearby. The name of the village is derived from the man's name Oyvindur (which is Eyvindur in Icelandic). The village was isolated until the road from the south reached the village in 1969. There is a hiking trail over old overland postal routes north from Fuglafjørður to Oyndarfjørður (with Youth Hostel), then west to ElduvÃk, then south to Funningsfjørður and back to Fuglafjørður. Glyvrar
Glyvrar ( da, Glibre) is a village located on Eysturoy, in the Faroe Islands. It is one of several villages on the east side of the Skálafjørður fjord that have grown into a 10-kilometre-long conurbation. In Glyvrar there is a museum called ’Bygdasavnid Forni’. The church in Glyvrar was originally built in 1927, but it was heavily restored in 1981. From 1903 to 1928 there was a school for navigators in Glyvrar. Graduates from here would become masters of fishing-ships. The Bible translator Victor Danielsen worked as a teacher in Glyvrar in 1914. The salmon-farming company Bakkafrost is based in Glyvrar. Bakkafrost is the largest fish farming company in the Faroe Islands and one of the biggest private employers in the islands, if not the biggest. Bakkafrost is the eighth largest fish-farming company in the world. Funningsfjørður
Funningsfjørður ( da, Fundingsfjord) is a village located at the end of a fjord of the same name ('fjørður' is the Faroese word for 'fjord'). It was founded in 1812 and has since 2005 been part of the municipality of RunavÃk. Whaling station In 1901, the Norwegian Conrad Evensen bought the old whaling boat ''Emma'' from a company in the Finnmark in northern Norway, and founded the whaling station in Funningsfjørður, also with the name Emma. The first year the station produced 1160 barrels of whale oil. The company only had one boat from 1901 to 1909, though in 1905 Emma was whaling from a station in Iceland. In 1909 the company bought a new whaling boat called ''Funding'', named after the village Funningur which had lent its name to the fjord which in turn lent its name to the village. 1909 was the best year for whaling in Faroese whaling history, with 13,850 barrels of whale oil produced in total.
