The Internet country code top-level domain ( ccTLD) .io is nominally assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory. The domain is operated commercially by Afilias, a domain name registry subsidiary of Ethos Capital. Google's ad targeting treats .io as a generic top-level domain (gTLD) because "users and webmasters frequently see he domainmore generic than country-targeted". The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom situated in the Indian Ocean, halfway between Tanzania and Indonesia.
