.dd
.dd was the assigned country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It was chosen based on the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for the German Democratic Republic, the letters coming from the German name of the country, '. In accordance with IANA policy, .dd was therefore available to be assigned as the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for East Germany. However, this was never done, and so .dd was never added to the root nameservers. Its only use was internally in an isolated network among the universities of Jena and Dresden. Country Code Top-level Domain
A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is an Internet top-level domain generally used or reserved for a country, sovereign state, or dependent territory identified with a country code. All ASCII ccTLD identifiers are two letters long, and all two-letter top-level domains are ccTLDs. In 2018, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) began implementing internationalized country code top-level domains, consisting of language-native characters when displayed in an end-user application. Creation and delegation of ccTLDs is described in RFC 1591, corresponding to ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes. While gTLDs have to obey international regulations, ccTLDs are subjected to requirements that are determined by each country's domain name regulation corporation. With over 150 million domain name registrations as of 2022, ccTLDs make up about 40% of the total domain name industry. Country code extension applications began in 1985. The registered country code extensions in that year in ...

Dd (Unix)
dd is shell command for reading, writing and converting file data. Originally developed for Unix, it has been implemented on many other environments including Unix-like operating systems, Windows, Plan 9 and Inferno. The command can be used for many purposes. For relatively simple copying operations, it tends to be slower than domain-specific alternatives, but it excels at overwriting or truncating a file at any point or seeking in a file. The command supports reading and writing files, and if a driver is available to support file-like access, the command can access devices too. Such access is typically supported on Unix-based systems that provide file-like access to devices (such as storage) and special device files (such as /dev/zero and /dev/random). Therefore, the command can be used for tasks such as backing up the boot sector of a drive, and obtaining random data. The command can also support converting data while copying; including byte order swapping and conve ...
