DotGears Company Limited (trade name: .Gears) is a Vietnamese video game developer based in Hanoi that specialises in mobile game A mobile game, or smartphone game, is a video game that is typically played on a mobile phone. The company was founded in 2005 by Dong Nguyen, and is best known for developing the 2013 game '' Flappy Bird'', which became popular due to its simple mechanics but high difficulty. As of December 2015, the company employs six people, including Nguyen. After releasing multiple games that copied the ''Flappy Bird'' mechanics, .Gears partnered with Japanese developer Obokaidem, which the developer maintained would be .Gears' only partner "for the foreseeable future". ''Flappy Bird'' is a mobile game developed by the Vietnamese video game artist and programmer Dong Nguyen ( vi, Nguyễn Hà Đông), under his game development company .Gears. The game is a side-scroller where the player controls a bird, attempting to fly between columns of green pipes without hitting them. Nguyen created the game over the period of several days, using a bird protagonist that he had designed for a cancelled game in 2012. The game was released in May 2013 but received a sudden spike in popularity in early 2014 and became a sleeper hit. ''Flappy Bird'' received poor reviews from some critics, who criticized its high level of difficulty and alleged plagiarism in graphics and game mechanics, while other reviewers found it addictive. At the end of January 2014, it was the most downloaded free game in the App Store for iOS. ''Swing Copters'' is a 2014 arcade game, arcade video game released for iOS and Android (operating system), Android on August 21, 2014. It was developed by Vietnamese video game developer .Gears, best known for ''Flappy Bird'' (2013). The player controls a character wearing a helmet with helicopter rotors, and the player changes the direction of the character by tapping the screen. Gameplay The Bushnell's Law, easy-to-learn-but-hard-to-master gameplay consists of the player's tapping the screen to change the direction of the character. The game has a comparable high score system and is similar to ''Flappy Bird'', but it is even more difficult to control the rapid, horizontal movements of the protagonist. If a player touches an obstacle, game over, the game is over. Reception ''Swing Copters'' received generally "mixed or average" reviews, holding a Metacritic score of 56/100.
