The wavelet tree is a succinct data structure to store strings in compressed space. It generalizes the rankq{\displaystyle \mathbf {rank} _{q}} and selectq{\displaystyle \mathbf {select} _{q}} operations defined on bitvectors to arbitrary alphabets.
