Activation
Transcription factors may be activated or deactivated through their signal-sensing or effector domains. However, not all transcription factors have an effector domain; for example, approximately 400 C2H2 zinc finger transcription factors contain only DNA-binding domains (DBDs). Activation or repression of transcription factors can occur through a number of mechanisms, including:
