Controversies
The requirement for priests and monks to serve in the army since June 2026, has offended Swiss churches who are denouncing the fact that the Federal Council did not consult them before revising the law, as is customary for any legislative change in Switzerland. According to the government, pastoral ministry is reportedly no longer even considered "an activity essential to the maintenance of social life." Later, however, Swiss Federal Councilor, Martin Pfister, presented his excuses but did not amend the government’s decision.
