Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is intricately linked to disordered sleep. Many schizophrenia patients have a comorbid sleep disorder, and sleep abnormalities often precedes illness onset, suggesting that sleep disturbances are not only a secondary result of schizophrenia or its medication. Neurological studies on schizophrenia patients, using technologies such as electroencephalography, have demonstrated changes in sleep-related neural activities, such as deficits in sleep spindles and slow waves. A change in usual sleep patterns can signal the start of psychosis or a relapse.
