Sea sponges have also been used as an insertable menstrual product, and are sometimes marketed as reusable. Current assessments of their safety differ; early studies found them contaminated with mould, bacteria and sand, and the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved any sea sponges for sale as menstrual products in the US. Synthetic single-use alternatives are available in Australia and European Union countries, often called "soft tampons".
