Saraswat Brahmins

Extracted from the Wikipedia article Saraswat Brahmin.

Saraswat Brahmins are a community of several Brahmancastes spread over widely separated regions of the Indian subcontinent, spanning from Kashmir and Punjab in North India to Konkan and Malabar in South India, with Sindh and Gujarat in between. In places such as western and southern India, the claim of Brahminhood of some communities who claim to be Saraswat Brahmins is disputed. The word Saraswat is derived from the RigvedicSarasvati River.
