Musical instrument classification

Musical instrument classification is the practice of grouping musical instruments according to shared characteristics. It is a central concern of organology, the study of musical instruments. Classifications may be based on the material that vibrates, the method of sound production, playing technique, construction, musical role, register, or a society's own concepts about instruments. No single system serves every purpose: an orchestral catalogue, an ethnographic study, and a museum database may classify the same instrument differently.

In Western concert practice, instruments are commonly arranged into families such as strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and sometimes keyboards or electronic instruments. This practical grouping combines sound production, playing technique, and ensemble function. In comparative organology, the Hornbostel–Sachs system instead classifies an instrument principally by the component that first produces its sound.
